So, even after your quote of $45.00 and all your hard work she had the nerve to say that she was going to pay what she wanted after she "researched" others' prices? What makes this situation even worse is that it's a co-worker of your husbands!!!! I cannot believe she would treat you this way being that she is an acquaintance!! I could maybe justify her crazy behavior if she was a complete stranger and would never see you or your husband again--what complete nerve!!

Should we all start a betting pool?
I bet she 'researched' prices and then came back happy to pay the original quote of $45.

Is hubby just going on as normal, the men I know don't get mixed up in this kind of stuff too often. Even though I wished they would, usually they just shrug their shoulders - not my business.

Does the co-worker even bring up the fact that she still owes for the cake, or does she 'convienently forget'?

No, I do not watch the soaps icon_confused.gif - but I will be watching this one!!

I forgot to add in my other post...there's absolutely nothing wrong with a customer researching fair/market price for a service or product. Even good thing to do as the decorator just starting out (I've been doing some sleuthing for the time when I hang a sign up figuratively speaking, phoning around and pretending to be a bride or something. Have to figure out where you're going to sit in the market - there's a happy medium in there somewhere, can't charge way more than competition or you lose customers, but you cant charge way less either- as you have a designer product which demands a higher price)
Anyway, the point was, lol, researching prices isnt wrong, but this lady seems to have forgotten that's something you do BEFORE you enter into a contract with someone.
(still shaking my head at this one lol).

The first and last cake I never pre-quoted! It's the First Communion Cake in my photos and they paid me $40 for it. I thought it was a joke when my husband brought the check home.

Even for the closest of friends, acquaintances, etc - I will never fail to give my price up front again. Lesson learned the hard way!

A castle cake no less than $75 - they are alot of work, take a lot of time. preparation ahead of time, etc...

Off topic - Angie $40 bucks, what a joke, I would have offered no less than at less $100.(and that would be a friends price) She should have been embrassed to give you that amount.

Well, I have an update to my story, anyway...lol. The person I made this cake for bragged about what an unbelievable price I did it for and now I have party guests ringing my phone off the hook! I feel like a cake hooker! icon_redface.gif

At that price I'd phone you whenever I needed a cake too! Hell, I'd open a shop and order the cakes from you - unbelievable that it didn't occur to her that not only did she set the price for you - but she ripped you off when doing it! All these people she's telling and no one has said anything?
Could you call her and ask she not quote that price - that normally it would be at least double what she chose to pay?

icon_mad.gif Balls is right!!! and not little cake balls either - big bright, brass ones!

Oh - that was a beautiful cake by the way!! At that price I may have even considered bronzing it![/u]

If we go with the optimists on here and assume she is researching to see how much MORE she should be paying you, that is no excuse for withholding ALL payment until she "researches" it. She should have paid you at the door .... if she wanted to do research and send you more later, that is always a welcome option. But to hold payment until SHE decides what it's worth??

"oh, Mr. Grocer? .... I'm going to take this cake from your bakery home with me. we will have our party, we will cut and eat the cake. I will THEN do some research to see what the other grocers are charging for this cake, then *I* will decide when and how much to pay you for this cake. The cost of your supplies? Your store rent? Your utility bills? No big deal. You'll get my payment after I decide what it's worth."

Yeah ..... THAT'LL work!

gateaux Cake Central Cake Decorator Profile

Angiescake, please dont feel cheap, make sure you tell the people calling you that she got a Super discounted only paid for the supplies, because ok insert white lie here: "your DH asked you to make the cake for really cheap"
On the other hand, you could say, there was a miscommunication and that cake was really $140 and that she still owes you.. ok that would be a really bad lie. icon_twisted.gif but then it would feel sooo good! icon_lol.gif

I would also go with what DecoratingDingbat said about calling her and asking her politely not to advertise the price she decided to pay you since you would have charged her an additional $80 to $100 over what she gave you beacause that cheap $40 did not cover all your materials. And if she ever wants another cake she better stop it or you will send the cake Nazi after her! ..... uhm I am very hormonal today.... I better stop or I will start to cry or laugh and go into labor!
I really like that Cake Nazi, I forget who quoted it earlier this week, and I am sure it's been used before but I really like it. Eventhough I did not watch Senfield on a regular basis, I loved the soup nazi! So, No CAKE FOR YOU!

I have the same problem with charging for cakes. I cant wait to see what lepaz has to say. I am just thinking it's been a few days, I know people are busy and she has a 3 year old, but if she had gone anywhere else, she would have had to pay before or on pick up!

Man, I just wish lepaz could post a picture...

Good luck.

icon_lol.gif ROFL! Ya, what she said - No cake for her!! - I don't even need to be hormonal to feel that one! On a foot note - I've never had a problem charging for a cake - I would have a problem being told what I'll be charging though!! The mere thought of it stirs up hormones that I didn't even know I had. I think Angie should send this woman over to your house gateaux thumbs_up.gif !

What i think is comical is IF this woman thought $40 was too high, she REALLY has had her eyes opened if she has truly done research. I mean if she hasn't looked at grocery chains and has looked at bakeries and specialty places...things like that...she has seen that this type of cake costs a lot more then $40! Maybe now she feels like a complete horses's *** and is having a hard time eating crow, even though she had no trouble eating cake! icon_lol.gif

Regardless, I agree that she absolutely should have paid the $40, since it was agreed upon. I wish someone had her email address. We could send her this link as part of her extensive "research!" icon_rolleyes.gif

LOL @ all of the above... cake hooker was a good one icon_wink.gif I've felt like that so many times lol. And the cake porn... my husband says the same things lol. He sits back and reads with me and looks at me with his eyebrow raised (just like the Rock does lol) and said what did she say? lol and he'll look at pictures with me and ask me "how'd they do that" I'll explain it to him to the best of my knowledge and he'll walk away shaking his head saying we are conspiring against the world to turn the world into one big huge slice of cake or some junk like that lol. That's it's just wrong that some people know these things and other's don't and that we keep too many secrets from our husbands lol. He'll storm off in a huff like a child and go mope around for a bit and come back and ask me to make him something sweet to make him feel better lol

Boys will be boys I guess lol

Certainly hope she pays her at least the $40.~ she quoted her and I really hope she pays her what it's really worth!

People want things for free. They dont care how long it took you to make it or the cost of the supplies. They are probably thinking it was a 99cent cake mix and that your biatching for nothing.
I had my best friends sister give me an order for 10 trays of cookies 300 total. She gave me the order on Wednesday and wanted me to have them done by Friday. Since I do this out of my house and Im the sole person doing it, she didnt understand what the problem was. She didnt even think that I dont happen to keep special cookie cutters on hand not to mention 20lbs of butter, and so forth. They really have NO IDEA!
