I have avoided rolled fondant since I started decorating because I think it tastes bad. Today one of my best clients asked me to take a class on it because she really likes the look........she watches Food Network and says "they make it look so easy". Where do I start? I'm very scared to try fondant and don't have the time right now to take a class.......any suggestions?

don't be scared. Its is so easy to handle...first you need to roll it out .. dust with corn starch so it won't stick to the surface...I tried powdered sugar, I didn't like it... Findant take color really well...
as for the taste, it is just very sweet just like any icing..
good luck

I too was scared to do fondant ... you're right about the taste, most do taste bad... I've been reading about the marshmallow fondant on here (MMF) ... I hear it tastes much better... my sister keeps putting the idea down because she said she can't see how it wouldn't be too sticky or get too sticky with our humidity here down south.... that won't deter me .. I will make it!! and believe me, if I can do fondant, you can do fondant.. get you a good book the shows how to do it and more than likely, you can do it all on your own with no problems.. if you have any questions, come here and post your question .. there are always people here knowledgeable about these things .. good luck!!

I was scared to do fondant at first but I really love it now!!! I make my own marshmallow fondant, tastes like circus peanuts....the cost is less to make it than to buy it already made and it tastes so much better. You need to try it......it's just like rolling out a pie crust...you can do it!!!!

I live in South LA too, and the Marshmallow Fondant has worked out incredibly for me so far! I used the Wilton fondant once for a class, and it tasted gross. The MMF tastes better, but it is so sweet I still don't eat it, but at least it's not disgusting! The kids love it.

It is great to work with, easy and fun! I felt like a kid playing with play-doh icon_biggrin.gif You should make a small batch of the marshmallow fondant and just play around with it, see how you like it.

To put it on your cake as icing, just put a very thin layer of buttercream on the cake, roll out your fondant and drape it over the cake, smoothing the sides with your hands. You can cut out shapes with cutters, just put a bit of water on the back to attach them to the cake.
