Sorry to bother you with this but we don't have it here so I 've never seen this beforeicon_eek.gif but I've seen this ingreedient in many recipes that I liked...

So my question is: is this powder or already made drink (in fluid form)? What would be a good substitute (from scratch)? Cream (carnation) or powdered milk? Milk protein? Could someone write me the list of ingredients if anyone has it on hand?

I'd like to replace it as I usually do with american recipes but here I don't even know whether it's liquid or powder and that might have a considerable effect on the cosistence of my finished goodies icon_biggrin.gif

Carnation Instant Breakfast is a vitamin and protein fortified, non-fat milk based drink, which comes in either powder form or ready-to-drink liquids in cans. What you would use as an ingredient would depend on how the recipe reads.

Here's the website on it, which will give you more information.

Thanks! I thought it might be both. The recipe calls for 1 packet of this. Here's one of the recipes:
http://www.meals.com/Recipes/RecipeDetails.aspx?RecipeID=31557

Almost all smoothie and shake recipes on that site and also on other sites has this ingreedient... I don't know what would be the right substitute since if I used (liquid) creamy cocoa for instance instead of chocolate carnation instant drink it might be too much liquid. What do you think?

I went throu that site you send me. If the recipe calls for ready to drink...carnation instant drink than they mean liquid otherwise it's just powder - am I right?

Also what would I substitute the liquid readytodrink carnation drink? Plain milk wouldn't do I think since it's also in the same recipe... milk+cream+powdermilk? Any idea?

Tortica -

I will send you a list of ingredients soon. I have not had the chance as yet. Give me another day. We will figure out what you need to use. I do not know where you live, so I cannot make any suggestions off the top of my head.

You can PM me at [email protected].

There's plenty of things I think you could substitute depending on what you're going for. If you want the added protein I think any powdered mix for making protein shakes would work or any premade ones too. You can find those in grocery stores or health food stores here.

I think you could also try Ovaltine, or a hot chocolate mix, or even any powdered mix to make chocolate milk. The main difference is that it won't have the added protein and vitamins that the carnation has. Ovaltine has some vitamins. For liquid substitutes, any flavored drink matching the flavor you need would work, even juice.

I used to drink the Carnation instant breakfast all the time. I was a swimmer in highschool and it was what I would drink after practice before school - we had precious little time to get ready.

I live in a very small country in Europe, called Slovenia. It's hard to tell what we have here since I don't know what you have... We don't have cakeflour, selfrising flour, instant tee (although I've seen it once), we recently got coconut fat, we have instant pudding, but not cakemix,... We have starch and baking powder so it's easy to replace cake and selfrising flour.

As for those mixes for shakes I really don't know. I'll search some sports-diet-shop - maby get lucky there. There is no such thing in our grocerys as far as i know - but I'll check it out just in caseicon_smile.gif There are some sliming things but I don't think that's what they call for in the recipe. We definately don't have Ovaltine here - what is that? We have hot chocolate mix but it's ment to be brewed first and main ingreedient is starch... powdered milk o make chocolate mix - you mean sweetened cocoa?

I don't care for proteins and vitamins since I get enough of them in my regular food (i love fruiticon_smile.gif - I'd just like it to taste good and to have the right consistency. The later might be a problem if I don't know the right substitute...

Hi,

If you are just looking for a good recipe for a smoothie, here is what I do:

1 cup of frozen fruit ( strawberries or blueberries, or whatever fruit you like,no sugar added)
1 cup of milk
2-3 packets of sugar substitute (you could use real sugar if you like)

Put it all in the blender and mix till smooth. I really like this for a snack... You can also add yogurt if you like.
