i have heard a lot of topics talking about fondant and how nasty it is and then hear people talking about mmf and how yummy it is. ive made two cakes with mmf and they tasted good, i used a buttercream crumb coat on both. i am very new to this site(but am addicted to it) and new to cake decorating, until i found cc i had only ever used buttercream, but thanks to this site im now addicted to mmf. so what is the difference between mmf and fondant why do they taste so different? thanks! birthday.gif

Hey mookey! As far as I understand it, there are many types of fondant and many recipes for it. MMF is just a marshmallow based fondant. Glad you're enjoying CC.

Yeah, there are lots of recipes for fondant, or you can buy it premade (just don't buy the Wilton brand if you plan to eat it, lol). MMF is pretty good and is very easy to make.

There are a whole bunch of different types of fondant out there. MMF is common because it is easy to make and actually does taste good. Brand name fondants include: Wilton (BLECH!), Satin Ice, Pentice, Choco Pan, and FondX (I think that is what is), and I'm sure there are more. Then there are tons of homemade recipes out there too! Each has its own unique taste.

Obviously you've never tasted the regular store bought fondant (Wilton). It's horrible!! I've never met anyone who has liked the taste of that fondant. My husband said it was like "chewing air". Really bad. Of course I have my own recipe that I have for making fondant and it taste like candy corn (the halloween candy) and is very pliable. It's just really soft though and takes a while to dry. Now I am addicted to the mmf. It's much easier to make and easier on the pocket book as well, which my hubby LOVES!! thumbs_up.gif

Wilton's is okay for making decorations that you don't plan to eat. It does dry faster and it's pretty easy to work with. I keep a batch around for cutouts, etc. But I'd never cover a cake with it.
