I am just wondering what everyone rolls their fondant out on when covering a cake. I have the wilton mat and I don't really like it. I bought a Roll-pat, like a silicone mat, which I love but it is not big enough to roll out on when I want to cover a cake. Do you just dust your counter top? If so, what do you do when using colored fondant. Doesn't the cornstarch show all over the fondant? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I'm kinda weird about using my counter top for any food stuff so I use the Wilton rolling mat. It has measurments on it which is helpful for how big you need your fondant.

You can always go to a craft or fabic store and get a piece of Vinyl. I haven't tried this personally but I've heard alot of people say they like the way it works. The Vinyl comes in a few degrees of thickness and also this will allow you to buy the size you want.

hope this helps!

I use frosted vinyl that I got from JoAnn's. You can get a yard for really cheap and the fondant sticks when you need it to, but comes right off. So no need to grease it with crisco.

Way funny that you ask cause i have this PRECIOUS piece of counter top that was left over when they cut the sink hole when my parents remodeled the kitchen. I put felt pads on the bottom and now it can sit right ont he couter but it is easier to clean and its pretty sanitary since i can wipe it down before/after i use it with ease. I love it...if you ever get your countertop redone, tell them to PLEASE give you the piece from the sink! icon_smile.gif Maybe a kitchen showroom would have some stry pieces for you to buy! I cover it in crisco and if i need powder i use powered sugar...

I use vinyl, too. Depending on the brand of fondant, I use crisco or corn starch on it. I like being able to turn the vinyl rather than picking up the fondant when I roll large or long pieces. I have any Ateco silicone counter mat and I don't like it as much as the vinyl. The vinyl is so cheap that you can have multiple sizes for very large or very small pieces. You can then pick up the vinyl, flip it over, position the fondant on the cake, and peel off the vinyl. It cuts down on stretching of large, heavy fondant pieces.
