I have my very first disaster since 2003. I began cake decorating cakes in 2003 and since then I have never dropped a cake until yesterday. I was making a strawberry flavored cake with strawberry icing for my father. I was icing the cake on the island in my kitchen in the corner of the island b/c supplies were everywhere. After I finished icing the cake I turned the cake around slightly not realizing that it was on the edge of the island. Then it happened! I dropped the entire cake on the floor. I tried to save it b/c it fell on its side but it was so moist that it began to fall apart when trying to pick it up.
I didn't make another one b/c I was beat from the night before. I had already been up til 4am making 20 dozen cupcakes for a picnic due at 12 noon. I'll have to make it up to him next time.
UGH, that was a big fear of mine this weekend! I had a HUGE graduation cake that was 2 11x15 sheet cakes put together. So big hte graduates step dad had to make me a board for it to go on. Thankgoodness the board was really nice and sturdy cause that sucker was HEAVY! I always carry my cakes upstairs to a spare bedroom so the cats wont get to them. OMG i caould feel that weight shifting...i feared that the cake would fall down the stairs! EEEK! Thank God it was fine. I fear my day is coming, I guess you can be glad that your day is over, heehee!
Been there, done that and I feel your pain!! Just be glad you weren't doing it for a client. Sorry this happened to you.
