I've been so busy creatining cakes the last few days, I haven't had a chance to go shopping for Father's Day. I'd love to be able to bake a cake as a gift for my husband, but alas he hates cake. I can't even get him to eat ice cream cake.

So, I'm about to implement, yet again, the solution his mother found - jello! Maybe this time I'll make three round graduated thin layers (4", 6", and 8") and stack them like a cake. I could secure it with super long skinny candles. And now that I'm thinking about it, I could use whip cream to creates borders for the trim.

Well thanks for letting me vent, I think cc just helped me to find a solution. I love this website.

My father is not suppose to eat cakes but he loves me to make him one and let everyone else eat it. I get the enjoyment out of doing it for him. Glad you found a solution for your husband...

Maybe we could get your huband to share his attitude with greenhorn's and my husband. In the meantime, it's off to the store to get the required missing ingredients.

OMG I sooo hear you! When I made my first wedding cake for a coworker of my dads, everyone loved it, but my dad didnt even eat a piece! I was bummed out. He said he would take a piece home for later cause cake doesnt taste good wiht beer. Well we took some home and he never ate it. He was all about the gross chicken wings he took home. I have heard that men are more all about meat and women like sweets but I dont believe that cause my brother ate 3 pieces (he is really pickey too!) and my dear sweet boyfriend ate 2! My dad just doesnt like cake i guess. I tried not to take it personal but I wish he would have tried the cake...It WAS my first wedding cake ever! Different strokes for different folks I guess...

What is it about the cake they do not like, the sweetness, the cake itself, ???

There are plenty of ways to experiment once you narrow down the culprit. If it is the cake, you could torte into really thin layers where the fillings come forward more on the tongue, so you don't get a mouth full of cake and crumbs, lol.

If it is the icing, there are thousands of different variations. Ever try an Italian Meringue Buttercream? These are nothing like the home bakers powdered sugar with Butter/Crisco frostings. There are also whipped cream icings (stabilized) to glazes.

Personally, I could not imagine not liking cake. I live for it, lol. I would not give up on them, just mix it up until you find one that appeases them. icon_smile.gif

I get tired of eating cake SO I make rice crispy cakes. It also comes together a lot faster so I can decorate the cake! I usually just put a very thin layer of icing over the rice krispies so when we cut it it isn't really really sweet.

And my BF prefers cookies over cake so making just a batch of sugar cookies keeps him happy =)

Also what about cheesecake? I know you are already planning on doing jello, but just an idea for later use? People have also done cookies and brownies stacked and iced like a cake or just decorate the top.

Someone was even going to do a meatloaf cake decorated in Mashed potatoes. I had seen that idea in a magazine a few years ago for a backwards birthday party and had forgotten about it.

Let your imagination go wild!

My bf does not like cakes either, I have asked him why since I know he does not mind sweetness, he said it was the consistency. MY BF's taste are strange it does get frustrating from time to time but if I really want him to try it he will just not much. I have tried every type of cake and the only one he liked was the chocolate zuracatta cake.

My husband likes his sugar in closer to a pure form. For instance, he loves organge slices, jelly beans, mike and ikes, and nerds. He also will add 8 to 10 tsp of sugar to a cup to tea - and no he isn't diabetic.....yet.

So, if I could find a candy-like cake ricipe (without chocolate I might add) I might be able to convince him to at least try it.

regymusic, well, that is a though one. There is a reason candy is bite-sized. I would not want a candy, pure sugar cake, personally. You could mimic the flavors of jelly beans with Koolaid frosting and Koolaid, zests and extracts in cakes, but it is still cake in the end.

I guess you can make him candy and a mini-cakes for yourself, lol.

Funny you should mention Kool-Aid, he loves the stuff. I usually stay well stocked on cake supplies. The one ingredient I tend to run out of is sugar. Can you guess why? Finally, learned to keep a back-up supply in the trunk of my car.

Thanks for all the feedback, you guys have got me thinking. I know this is a website for cakes, but does anybody have a recipe for something similar to either orange slices or jelly beans.

4.Bring to boil over medium-low heat, stirring constantly
5.Cook without stirring until temperature reaches 280o F
6.Reduce heat to low
7.While first pan is cooking, place juice, pectin and baking soda in medium sauce pan
8.Bring to boil over medium heart, stirring constantly
9.Boil 1 minute,
10.Reduce heat to low, cook until temperature reaches 280o F

Have you tried better than sex cake? It's got jell-o in it so you taste more of that than the cake. I was taught to make it in a 9x13 baking dish and leave the cake in the dish but I have made it in round cake pans and decorated it like I would a normal cake.

Thanks for all the recipes and the humor, I was rolling over laughing. Showed this post to my husband, he told me I shouldn't work so hard at a solution, just to give him a bag of Jelly Bellies and call it a day. Of course that would be too easy.

I know I'm going to try the Basic Gummies Recipe and the better than sex cake. Thanks for being there guys.

That would be a good trade for me. I am not sure which I like more--cake or Jelly Bellies. What if you made a Jelly Bellie covered cake??? He could eat the top half and you the bottom! Might make for an interesting cake too---like a mosaic beading.

I am fortunate, my husband eats everything and I love baking and cooking. But...I don't eat cake. I just don't like sweet things. So, if I feel I would like to have some I make a heavier cake and torte it into at least 6 layers, fill it with regular puddings or some other not so sweet filling. I make a pure buttercream icing, all butter, and use lemon juice instead of milk or water for the liquid. If you try this remember that lemon juice will bleach your colours out so don't use it if you want true colour. If sweet is a problem for anyone out there this may work. In fact I don't do it often because then I eat too much cake and I must be allergic to it because it makes my thighs bulge.

Wow, I love the idea of a jello cake. My husband never seems to care if he has a cake to eat on his birthday or not. I grew up with a family that made sure you had a cake on your birthday. It just isn't normal to not have cake on birthdays to me. He loves jello though. In fact he was complaining the other day how I never make jello, lol. I make all kinds of other sweet things, but no jello. I think he may get a knox blox cake for his birthday this year icon_twisted.gificon_biggrin.gif .

Thanks for the idea !!! icon_smile.gif

We have a friend who is a real fancy cake decorator, and her (late) husband doesn't eat cake either. So for his bday he gets a pie, and she writes on it with whipped cream.

My husband actually likes cake, he will eat anything I bake, or try any new recipe that I have. The problem is though, that when it comes to making a birthday cake for him, or a father's day cake, his choice is a plain old chocolate cake from a box and frosted with icing from a tub. Nothing fancy, just plain. Hmmmmm!

My husband SAYS he doesn't like cake, but I've got him figured out. A butter cake with chocolate frosting will get him every time. He's liking the flavors I've been adding to my buttercreams too. I think he was just so use to store bought cakes he didn't know how good home-made could be! icon_biggrin.gif
