OK I am NOT having a good day!!!!

I am making the last batch of icing for my dad's cake and well my hand mixer dies - it's not hot at all and it's the first thing it's done ALL day! and it was ONLY FREAKING ICING!!! and if you recall my stand mixer died last month -s o what I'm gonna have to beat everything by hand - we can't afford even a cheap $20 hand mixer! UGH that was just annoying!

SOOOO I stack and dowel dad's cake going well and I look and it and I KNOW that it's not going to make it but there isn't anything I can do. SO I figured decorate it up and maybe it will make it till Sunday Ok OK OK I know at least let me FINISH decorating it and get a picture so Dad will at least see what it was SUPPOSED to look like! Well, I'm ALMOST done I mean final stars are being placed put the topper on and just need the border on! and I see it start to go - so I grab yet ANOTHER dowel rod and TRY to salvage it and NOPE I'm putting the rod in and it falls!

OK SO I BAWL LIKE A LITTLE BABY!! I Worked SO hard on this cake! And I was SO excited and I even was going to put it in the father's day contest on here- mind you the first time I've ever entered ANYTHING! But it's gone all fing gone!

Ok Ok I can salvage the top 2 layers and there is PLENTY of the bottom layer that we can still eat (new recipe) but I'm so upset!

My Daughter (she's 2 1/2 yrs old)had put herself in her booster seat (and buckled up) to play w/ scrap fondant and when I started crying she goes " Mommy unbuckle me so I can give you a kiss". Then I go and unbuckle her she gets down give me a huge hug and kiss then goes and gets me some "tea" from her kitchen and tells me to breathe. OMG I love my kids! My son (16 months old) put his finger over my mouth and said shhhhhhhhhhhhh it k....

I also know what I did wrong in fact I knew it a few days ago and only made the mistake on the bottom tier not the middle and top ones. SOOO at least I know what I did wrong and not to do it again.

BTW it was a topsy turvy cake my first attempt... I know I cut the bottom tier wrong and I know that's the problem it just doesn't help the pain. I was so upset I literally felt like I was going to throw up... icon_cry.gif

I am so sorry that happened though. You know we all feel your pain! I hope you are able to save the other tiers like you said. And when the story gets translated from your daughter to your dad, that will be the priceless father's day gift!

I really feel sorry for you, but I have one stupid question , you still use
HAND HELD MIXER icon_surprised.gif ? I thought they are absolete when Kitchen Aide came out !!! Oh my ! I would think that if you do a lot of big cakes, a counter top mixer is your best friend . oh dear..I am so sorry.. There is a solution somewhere..just collect yourself and look at your options. you can't give up now.. Take a break and relax for a moment. icon_smile.gif

Thanks guys I knew you'd understand, I was SOOO devistated I had put SO much into this cake.

Thank you for the wonderful comments on my kiddos. I do have some great ones, ellyrae - thank you especially on days like yesterday it's nice to know something thinks I'm doing a good job on what's more important (my kids).

Prettycake - TELL ME ABOUT IT! UGH using a hand mixer SUCKS! But I killed my stand mixer on my mom's Mother's Day cake. So I've had to use my hand mixer since and now well I guess I'll use my hands UGH.....

Why do I suck SOOOOOOO bad!!!

I tried to salvage the top 2 tiers! but they started to fall.... So I disassembled them and once kids went to bed made sure I was level and redowelled and stuff and tried to get again! Got it all done nearly again and BAM leaning tower of cake! I mean this cake is suppose to "Appear" that it's falling NOT actually FaLL!

WHY can't I do this! This sucks I feel so incompitent right now! I know that everyone has cakes tha fall apart and I am lucky I've made it this long w/o a true failure (have had some didn't like the decor but everyone else did). SO I know that everyone had bad cake days. But good grief no matter what I did today it was wrong there isn't anything I can do to save these stupid things! I just want to curl in a ball and cry and I THANK GAWD this isn't for a paying customer OMGoodness!

This is was my first attempt at a topsy turvy cake I don't think I'll be trying again for a while....

have a wonderful day.

you do not suck, don't say that! and you are anything but incompitent, I've had so much worse things than this happen. you CAN recover!

REDHARE--
My heart goes out to you. Your precious children...how sweet they are.

I have totally had days like yours was. Just the other day, on my first topsy cake--the top layer on the bottom tier started to crack--my heart started to sink. Don't know how, but I remedied it with frosting and let it sit over night before I did anything else to it.

Don't give up on the topsy cakes. I know once you get past this episode, you'll try another. Your work is too good not to.

UGH! I understand! I tried to make Collette Peter's Popcorn Bowl Cake. I made the stupid cake part like 3 times trying to get it to hold together - it kept being mushy in the middle and I wasn't sure about a heating core b/c it was a "bowl". I finally got it together, decorated the whole thing - and then it cracked and fell apart right in the middle! There was NO Saving it! I had a little bite and then threw the whole thing out. It was terrible!! icon_sad.gif

You know what, even if the cake falls apart you should still give it to your dad. I'll bet he'll eat it as though it were perfect. Sit down with Dad tomm. and tell him everything about the cake including what his wonderful grandkids said to cheer you up. Believe me, you'll get some laughs from this one day. Isn't it great to have kids that actually pick up on some of the motherly things that we do to soothe them and let them know how much we love them. It's amazing what they say and do. Sometimes I think that my daughter is 50 years old with the things that she'll say and do. Get some rest and enjoy Father's Day!!

I'm so sorry that that had to happen to your cake.

But take consolation in the fact that you have gained two beautiful memories from this disaster. You may forget the cake, but you will always remember your two little ones trying to console you. And that, is PRICELESS!

Karen

Also, I have to say this:

Prettycake, I think your post was rude! Not everyone has a KA, and some of us do have budgets. She was already upset, and your post, although couched in "nice" words was just plain rude and unnecessary.

OMG--

Redhare, last night must have been "ugly cake"night! (FOR ME AT LEAST!)

I "attempted" to make a "Father's Day" cake for my husband--with a tree on it, and a "daddy" possum "hanging out" with two "little possums...."

Yeah. So ugly was the cake (I only spent like 20 minutes total trying to actually decorate the damned thing--my youngest was right under me the whole time, just bugging me) that when he came home and saw the "possums" he said he thought they were HORNETS NESTS!!!!!
icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_lol.gif

GAH!

It tasted good though...

I really do feel your pain. Most of the time we're making things that are really pretty--Sometimes we forget: "There's an ugly cake in all of us!"

Redhair-I am so sorry that your having a rough time with this cake. I know saying "We all have days like that" just isn't enough. If you haven't already you might want to check out a post started by ge. It is on your worst cake. It is sooo funny and might help you see the bright side of this. Not to mention show you a few of your CC friends mishaps.

I took a look at your work and I am impressed. Please don't let this discourage you in anyway. I am to scared to attempt a tilted cake. I applaud your bravery.

Thanks everyone! Ya'll have no idea how much better ya'll are making me feel!
So I took all 3 layers of the cake to my parents today and told My Dad what happened. He actually apologized he said sorry you went thru so much for my cake. But I told him the original design of the cake and he loved the idea and the thought I had put into it. I told him how long I had been planning this (months). I told him about the kids and he thought that was the sweetest.
Well he instantly wanted to try it bottom layer was the cake dr's snickerdoodle w/ the chocolate cinnamon cream cheese icing as the filling.
the middle tier was the cake dr's german chocolate w/ the 'filling' as the pecan icing thingy.

top tier was a family recipe of peanut butter cake with peanut butter icing as the filling - I just got the recipe so I wanted to make sure I got it right!

I have seen the disasters post so it's nice to know that even the ppl that I admire on here have bad days too. I guess that's sick pleasure but it's reassuring for me.

And yes, as much as I didn't want to tell lots of ppl about my disaster I had to b/c I just had to share the wonderful story of how my kids reacted, it made me so proud (and cry a little more b/c they were being SO sweet). My daughter even was telling Daddy that night "I make mommy happy her cake fall down and she cry I make her happy and gave her kisses" and it that sweet voice it was SO hard not to tear up again. I am TRULY blessed with wonderful kids.
Thank you all for encouraging words and frankly for thinking I have enough talent to not give up.
