I am currently a cashier and am about to begin a new job as a cake decorator I was told that they start people at a certain level with no experience, but I have experience both as a cake decorator and in a bakery. Well, they say they want to start me at what I pretty much make as a cashier, which is far less than what I was told they start inexperienced decorators.

I JUST got the job and haven't officially worked a day yet, so I want to approach this before I do, but I'm not sure how to.

I would think that you would have to explain to them what you had been told about the position and that you had expected at least a certain level...the thing to consider is what may happen if they say they can not pay you what you expected. Are you ready/prepared to stay a cashier or are you willing to take a lower pay to make cakes?

I would feel the need personally to talk to them before actually starting as long as you have not quit at your other job. The end result has to be what will satisfy your needs and will make you happy.

Good Luck

I'm helping them open a new store, so due to foggy scheduling, I needed to be available, so my last day as a cashier is less than a week away. However, due to the instability, nothing feels like it's solid, so that's why I'm not sure how to approach it.

I've already put in my 2 weeks notice and I don't want to pass up the chance to work as a decorator, but I feel as though I'm being WAY undercut here.

My cashier salary is (for example): 8.00/hr.
They told me they would start me at: 9.90/hr.
They want to start me at: 8.15/hr.

ok.. you definately need to say something.. that is a huge pay cut....
Call them up today or just go down to the store and say, do you have a minute, i would like to talk over somethings with you"
I m sure they will understand, i mean they have to. When you are told one thing.. and they say another, who wouldnt question that?
besides, decorating cakes is a lot of work!
Go talk to them! ASAP!!
let us know what happens!
It will be ok icon_smile.gif

i'd talk to them and see if they'd pay you more.....if they wont, i'd still take the job(to learn the business and then take your experience somewhere else and get paid more) let us know!

I brought it up and let them know it bothered me (I was nice about it) and that with the cost of traveling, my wage would be about the same. They're going to call me tomm. with a different offer. Thank goodness!

I do plan to take the job for the experience if nothing else! I love decorating and to make a job of it! Yea!!! I'll let you know how it goes.

Thank you for your encouragement.

Good for you!! I hope they come back with a more fair offer. I work in HR and have to tell you that it never hurts to ask for more as long as you have good rationale and are pleasant about it. Most often people get more if they ask and the worst they can do is say no.

Good luck!!

I'm glad you asked too... I also work in an administrative office that handles HR related duties... If approached with a constructive reason why you feel like you're entitled to more, I see no reason why they should be offended ... but stick to your reasons... sometimes they will kind of put things off thinking you'll settle for the lesser amount ... don't let this happen to you.. let them know that you are expecting to be compensated as you are experienced in the field they're asking you to go into... tell them because of your experience, you will be an asset to their bakery department!!
