I volunteered to do a wedding cake and groom's cake for some friends of ours that were on a budget. This was my third wedding cake, so I wanted to read up as much I could so the cake would look really good. Anyway, so I had read on one of the postings how much easier it is to level and tort cakes if they are frozen. I did a practice run and it did work beautifully! I have never gotten my cakes that level when they've been at room temperature. So, morning of the wedding, things are going pretty well, I've got my long thin serrated knife and I'm on the last cake for the groom's cake (tabasco bottle). I had already knicked myself a couple times when the knife slipped, so I was trying to be extra careful. Well, when the knife cut all the way through that cake, it also went into (but not all the way through) my finger. I was like, holy *&^$!, what have I done?! So I went to my husband and woke him up and told him I cut my finger and didn't know what to do. To make a long story short, we ended up using Krazy Glue. If we had gone to the emergency room, I would never have gotten the cakes done. Of course then when we got to the wedding as guests, I had to explain this bandage on my finger. But it's much better now, I can almost bend it all the way! I am going to buy one of those mesh cutting gloves before I do my next cake! Also, Krazy Glue works in an emergency situation!

Holy cow, you are a real trouper! I would never thought of the super glue. I'm sure the bride and groom appreciated it! And I sure will remember to be careful if I ever tort a frozen cake. Yow.

Doug, it's possible. I am very accident prone. Friends and family are no longer surprised when I do something klutzy.

Maybe you better get that Wilton gadget that can torte and level cakes. No sharp edges involved. It comes in different widths for all size cakes. I prefer it over a knife for the reason you described.
Hope your finger is feeling better.

Did you know the hospitals are using their own version of crazy glue now for that very thing? icon_smile.gif

I feel for you. I'm glad you finished the cake and that you're okay. I cut my middle finger really bad with a bread knife a few years ago. I was at home with my 3 month old when I sliced the tip of my middle finger off. I almost passed out from the THOUGHT of what I did. I couldn't even look. Hours later, in the ER, all bandaged up, the doctor told me that years from now I wouldn't be able to see it because my finger nail will grow and pull skin and it will cover the evultion. (Nasty word)

He was right. I'm all good now. But you should see how I am with my bread knife today. LOL.

I'm glad you're okay. The big cake levelers look just as scary to me. I only have Wilton's smaller one.

Happy Healing.
Angie

I have the giant cake leveler and I love it. It's so quick and easy. I won't lie though, I did slice my finger one night when I was cleaning it. Other than that, it's been a great investment.

OMG! I've done that too! You'd have thought I cut off my whole finger though with the way I was boo-hoo'ing. icon_cry.gif I'm such a baby. icon_rolleyes.gif

Chefgirl ~ Glad to hear you made it through. I probably would have been on the floor with my eyes rolled back in my head. LOL

(PS: You did an awesome job on those cakes!!)

My Mom cut her hand badly washing a glass years ago. She had to finish a big wedding cake with basket weave...left handed! Ouch. I was just a kid so I couldn't help.

Glad everything turned out OK for you. That is so stressful!

Um, Krazy glue? Just an FYI you might want to follow up with your Dr. Krazy glue is not sterile ( you risk infection) and it isn't the same thing they use in the hospital to "glue" an incision. Not trying to scare you but just want to make sure you do see a Dr and make sure your finger is okay.

If the cut isn't deep (such as a paper cut) you really should be okay.
