I have orders for 2 cakes!!! I made a practice cake for my DH's family reunion which is a perch fish fry on Memorial Day weekend. I did the fondant fish cake from Colette Peter's book. This was my first attempt working with fondant so I wanted to be sure to practice. (And my DH was thinking there was NO way I could do that yet given my novice level) I knew I could do it. Well, I did it and it looked GREAT. DH said he will never doubt me again. icon_biggrin.gif I did learn some things for the next one, but knew that I could do the cake. I brought it in to work yesterday and everyone loved it. I ended up with TWO orders for fish cakes! I decided to charge $20.00 ( of course DH thinks I am charging to little now icon_razz.gif )

I am so excited I can't stand it! It will be busy next weekend because I am doing a 12X18 to put the fish on top of for the family reunion and I have cake due on Friday, but I am just so excited I can't believe it!

Just had to share! I will post a picture of it as soon as I can at home and have DH help me do it!

Missa

The book is The Art of Cake Decorating and you can get it on Amazon for 22.05 (not sure how much DH paid for it). I think it is a great idea book and good instructions. It was part of my Mother's day gift. I made her fondant recipe and have gotten rave reviews over it. It is sweet, but for those that like sweet, they enjoyed it.

The picture is posted! Enjoy. As I said in my desciption, I don't think the picture did justice to the cake.

I had a lot of fun doing it however.

Well, I think it is wonderful, fabulous perfect and about 1/3 of the price you should be charging for it kiddo!
First of all, this is a specialty cake. Second it is done with fondant. Plus there is a lot of work involved colouring it and molding it and such.
You cannot get a cake like this anywhere. Doesn't even matter what size it is. If you had a bakery do it, the price would be upwards to about $75- $100 easily. I would likely charge $60 to $75.
Not meant as a criticism at all, most decorators undercharge. You are likely thinking of the amount of servings but in a cake like this, that has no bearing. It is the fondant and the time - your labour. really has nothing to do with how long you have been decorating either, if you can produce such a wonderful product.
By seeing your cake, I can surely understand why you got orders, good for you!

Wow, what a good job on the cake...maybe next time you can charge more since I say it's definetly worth more than $20
