I found a small business that needs a cake maker to do birthday cakes, I just started but they are in some need, should I practice really hard for a few weeks and go for it or wait for a few months and see where I am at?????
I say go for it. It will help you practice and learn someone elses tricks. I wish i could do that here. I'm just jumping it to it myself. I'm in the process of getting my own building now.
Good Luck.
That is what worries me, it is a cookie company, they have had a lot of request for cakes. I would be all alone. It is what I wanted but I am worried it is a little fast.
Don't wait and let this opportunity pass by. It came to you at this time for a reason. You can only go up from this experience. Just think, you might be kicking yourself in in the head a few months from now because you did not take them up on it. It's what you wanted and just because you say yes now doesn't mean that it's forever, either. Go for it!
Colorado will nto alow me to cook in my house do any of you have any ideas about what I can do?
Many states will not allow you to sell cakes from home. As your kitchen is not licensed or inspected. I am in one of those states too. In the future I plan to do just word of mouth business.
Go for it! Keep all your cakes simple in the start and then when you get your feet wet start experimenting and trying new things. Some of the best cake designers never even took a class. You have a great opportunity...dont let it pass.
I looked at your photos and they're great. You should go for it!!!! And you know if you ever have questions, there are tons of people here to help!! What a great opportunity for you!!
Go for it!! This sounds like a great opportunity. If you are worried that you might make a mistake, remember people who don't decorate cakes themselves will never notice! Good Luck!!!
Go for it!!! if you try it out and decide that it is tooo fast for you then you can either mention it to your boss and maybe he will hire someone to help you or you could quit. But I would do it esp. if you are thinking about opening your own business. I would be more likely to go to some who worked at a great company who made cakes then someone who is just starting out. I hope that makes sense.
just my opinion
No question. . . GO FOR IT!! Nothing ventured. . .nothing gained!! Especially if this is what you want to do . . .someone is willing to give you a chance, it might not come along again for long time.

you guys are going to give me a big head. I am going to look in to it and if I can work something out I think I will go for it, thanks for the help, advice, and comments.
Like everyone else here I'll say GO FOR IT!. I think that it is even better the fact that you would be alone in the cake department. I was in the same boat once ( it was a donut place) and I understand that it will be scary at first. But this will give you the opportunity to practice a lot on somebody elses expense. I promise that you will only get better.

I have this problem too. I'd have to have a separate kitchen and it would have to be built a certain way and then inspected. I've heard of decorators renting kitchens although I don't know much about this. Also have heard of using a church's kitchen for making wedding cakes and such. I've decided the next big cake I do will be done at my church, pending their approval and maybe a little donation! More hassle, but then again, more space and my kids wouldn't be distracting me, so I'd probably have much better results.
At least there are a lot of big churches around me and they should have big kitchens. Thanks for the tip.
Absolutely go for it! You have the opportunity to get paid to practice! I would do this in a heartbeat!
