Just want to start out hoping and wishing all the mothers out there had a fabulous Mother's Day!!!!

Now to the RED TONGUES icon_eek.gif !!!! I made the Spiderman bust cake for my nephew's b-day this past Saturday. I posted last Friday frantic that I was unable to get my BC red. But with plenty of helpful hints and patience the BC did in fact turn red (I will be posting pics soon).

As the guests arrived they were all very impressed and delighted with the cake. I used the WBH chocolate butter cake with cookies-n-cream filling and have always received great reviews and it is actually one of my favorite combos. The only thing different was I used the BC Dream recipe in order to get a crust for the cake and used RI for the webbing on the bust. I tasted it while I was preparing the cake and right off the bat was not really happy with the BC. Waaaaay too sweet for my taste. I absolutely swear by the WBH house BC recipe. DELICIOUS, but sadly does not crust. Anyway, time t cut the cake which they asked me to do. (that was painful icon_cry.gif ) As the adults and children starting eating the cake, I began to see red tongues to the right of me and red tongues to the left. The kids all looked like they had lipstick on!!!!!! icon_eek.gificon_eek.gificon_eek.gif

I was soooo embarrassed. I definitely did not get as many compliments on the taste as I thought I would and my Husband said the cake was great but the BC had a bitter after taste!!! icon_confused.gificon_confused.gif

I have a 3D pikachu cake for this weekend and def do not want to use the BC dream recipe. After all the hard work on Spidey, I was really upset with the taste. Sorry so long, but needed to unleash. Thanks for listening.

What is WBH house BC? I love new recipes. Sorry about your cake. I always try to talk people out of black and red cakes. I hate the after taste & staining.

Did you use wilton gels? Did you use no taste red, or regular red? The regular red will give you a nasty bitter aftertaste.

I'm sorry you're disappointed!

Did you use a no-taste red? Sometimes using so much red color to get a decent red makes the icing taste funny, and there isn't much you can do about that except use the no-taste where possible.

I had a mom ask for a 2-tier cake done in royal blue buttercream for her son's 1st birthday party. I told her I'd do it, but if I did that, all her guests would have blue teeth and - um - blue diapers. That made her change her mind! LOL

Red tongues aren't permanent, and by the time they get their photos back from the party, likely all they'll remember is how cool the cake was!

Hey amodeoandrea-

WBH - Whimsical Bakehouse Buttercream. If you would like, I can e-mail or PM you the recipe if you do not have the book. It's wonderful to work with and very, very tasty.

I actually used Americolor X-mas red. Is Wilton the only brand with no taste food gels??? Oh and can anyone recommend anothe crusting BC recipe that is not as sweet as butter cream dream??? TIA

Here is a picture of the "red tongued bandit" I posted it on another thread re: coloring bc red, so you may have seen it already. I think the airbrushing technique is starting to sound more appealing. Do any of you use it and any particular brand or one you can recommend???

Thanks again!

Your cake is breathtaking!!!! Sooo cool!!! I doubt that anyone minded the red tongues, products made to dye tongues are marked to kids (tongue tatoos, etc.)...

here's a bump about the bitter red

I like the BC Dream recipe, but I don't add the entire amount of suger sometimes. I like it better that way...

It depends on the application though, because it's much stiffer WITH all the sugar. If the icing doesn't have to "stand up", I leave out about 1/4 to 1/3 of the powdered sugar. And I use Sweetex - NEVER Crisco (ick!).

And again... AIRBRUSH dark colors on white icing - parents will thank you. lol!

I usually add a pinch of cinnamon to my red and black and any dark colored icings. It seems to cut the bitter taste out. I also invested in an airbrush machine. That helps alot. Beautiful cake though. I know that the kids did not mind at all.

Sorry for all the questions, but your Spidey looks like he has a nose, which really improves the dimensions of his face. I'm wondering, did you get a male or female head?

No worries icon_wink.gificon_wink.gif The head had facial features similiar to the foam head on the tutorial. It definitely was more feminine. I had to add a little extra bc around the jaw and chin line to give it a more masculine look. HTH, good luck.

P.S. - I think they do make male heads. One CCer, forgive me forgot who used a male head for her Batman bust and it came out perfect. I'll try to find the link to the pic and post it. Don't worry about questions this is the best place to learn with some great teachers!!!! thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif

Just wanted to let you know how great your cake looks! I'm very impressed. As for the red toungues: to me that is to be expected with any dark colored icing. I'm sure the adults weren't too surprised. Sorry to hear about the bitter taste though.

Thank you SPF!!! icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif I was admiring your delicate & beautiful Tiaras. If you don't mind I'd like to ask you a question. I tried piping a RI spiderweb for the spidey cake. I piped it from the day before and let it dry overnight. Didn't make it and I ended up placing the pieces on the cake board. When you pipe RI do you go over the same pattern 2 or three time to make sure it is sturdy and stiff enough to hold its shape. Just curious if I ma doing something wrong. TIA icon_rolleyes.gificon_rolleyes.gif

Your Spiderman cake looks great!!

I don't see me ever making a spidy cake but I read the whole tutorial on how to do it. VERY interesting!! Sure helps me to see that a thing isn't as intimidatingly difficult as it seems. Cool!

This is great. Maybe I should have told them that red tongues was all part of the "Spidey Effect" icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

Feeling much better. Thank you all. For kids cakes, maybe experimenting with the koolaid mixes as someone mentioned wouldn't be such a bad idea. Watermelon, Cherry, Strawberry Spidey!!!!! Hmmmmm icon_rolleyes.gificon_rolleyes.gificon_rolleyes.gif

Noosie, thanks. But I actually haven't tried royal icing in at least seven years. I've really got to start again. The tiaras are made from gumpaste. Hopefully soon, I'll try my first RI one.

Do you suppose the red would be such a problem if the cake was airbrushed, instead of coloring the fondant? Just a thought.

First and foremost...I love the cake! Its just amazing!!!! Secondly, I know the red tongued bandits too...except at our party, they were blue, like smurfs! We all had a good laugh, because the party was primarily adults, and we looked like a bunch of kooks! The blue bandit cake was made from a local bakery, and ever since, I try to steer clients away from really intense colors, as fondant isn't very popular here, and a large amount of color is needed for intense colored buttercream.
As previous posters said, there is no taste red, and that should cure your bitter problem. As for the color problem....hope those guys loved the red lips! haha Again....fabulous Spidey cake!!!

Noosie, I haven't had the red tongue thing yet...or perhaps I just didn't notice! Question about the WBH cookies and cream filling. I want to use it in a cake in July. How long can it go unrefridgerated? Also, regarding the WBH BC not crusting, how can I get it really smooth without my Viva papertowels? Thanks.
