Hi I just got a call if I could make a cake for an asian awareness banquet.
Im stumped .....I asked if they could give me a jumping off point but the caller said they would have to call me back on that on.

Ive looked under the gallerie for asian inspired cakes and am not sure what to do. I would like something other then a sheet cake because I feel that This way people will remeber me and thus give me more business later on.

Ok my dilema is what can I do without upsetting one group....to my understanding this is many groups not just one like china.

the only thing that i can relate this too is like LATINS- can be mexican, puerto rican, cuban , etc......I wouldnt put the picture of the mexican flag......if im not making sense let me know.
thanks Nancy

ps I just want to get a jumpimg off point so that when they call I can have some ideas....

Maybe you could ask them what about their asian culture would they like to see most depict on a cake. I don't think you would offend anyone with that question.. maybe that would open the door for them to give you some ideas of what they'd like to see on the cake ..

When you said asian inspired the first thing that came to mind was bamboo but I thought how would you incorporate that into a cake.....I was looking at the wedding cakes for some inspirations of my own and I found this one.....maybe you could use it as a jumping off point....it looks asian inspired to me...

What if you made a globe cake and placed that on top of a sheet cake surrounded by flags of the countries/peoples that are being represented. You could print out the flags to stick in the cake. The globe could be turned so that Asia was towards the front of the cake.

In that situation I would just ask for an example of what they're wanting. They should be able to supply you with a picture or something to go by. The first thing that comes to my mind when I hear Asian is Indian. My daughter in law is East Asian (hope I got this right) and the decorations for their engagement party and wedding were quite colorful. Lots of bright colors. I wouldn't think they'd be insulted if you showed that you were willing to learn something about their culture.

I hate it when they say what ever you think. The guy was like as long as its asian. I did probe more so he was gonna ask to see what else I could do.

but this way if I have some ideas they can say yes or no.........

and usually I have one idea but my cakes dont always end up theway i planned in my head....

I haven't tryed making bamboo with foudant. But if you look on line you should be able to find a chocolate mold that u can use to make some. Also check out the polymer clay press molds to use with the foudant. That way they will all come out the same size. After u mold them u can add in shadowing color with food coloring and a water base that can be brushed on. It is just a thought.

Ask if they have an emblem for their group that you could do a buttercream transfer of. You could still make it elegant by placing it on a stacked cake that had fondant on it. (Yes you can place a BCT onto fondant.)
