Is Wilton Fondant Really That Bad ?

So, i've looked around the posts here & i've heard NOTHING but HORRIBLE things about this fondant.

is there any way to flavor it?
can i still mix in food coloring?
anything else i should be worried about?

Help ?! PLEASE !
anything i could do ?
i can't buy another one, its too late & i've already baked.
my mistake as a beginning baker

I personally dont like any fondant just because of the texture of it. but yea sorry to say wilton fondant is nasty. the good news is you can color it no problem just knead in the coloring. as far as flavoring it I never tried but I think you probably could. and in the future try to make marshmellow fondant I tried it for the first time last week and it was really easy to make.

Here's how bad it is..... I keep some on hand for couples who have no idea what fondant is or tastes like. (Disclaimer: yes, I know Cc'ers have recipes for fondant that they say tastes great, but since I don't work with fondant, I don't make it and the Wilton is the only one I have on hand. I bought it once to see what it was like to work with, which reaffirmed my decision on why I don't).

I tell them to feel it, stretch it, taste it. ".....but wait. Here's a napkin for when you want to spit it out. And you WILL want to spit it out."

And they do.

It tastes nasty, yes. But a lot of people object to any fondant, so they'll pick it all off no matter how it tastes. I personally use Satin ice for covering cakes, but I use Wilton for making decorations that won't be eaten anyway. It's much easier to work with, I think.

I did buy some marshmallows tonight, I'm going to try MMF for the first time!

wilton fondant does taste nasty but is cheap and easy to work with to get a feel for how to model with it and to learn how to tint it.I learned the hard way that no one likes wilton fondant (except maybe the kid who eats paste in preschool...lol) My son looked at me after he tasted his fondant decorations..."Mommy WHY would you put that on my cake?"
MMF works for me ... I have to hide it from my kids. icon_biggrin.gif

i cant say that wilton fondant taste good but the first time i used it i thought that it was the worst thing i had ever tasted but i used it again recently and i guess i may have gotten used to it cause it wasnt as bad as i had thought and i have to say it is for me the most convient fondant to use it colors great, it is pretty easy to roll out and it firms up well, Also i always use 40-50% coupons from joanns and hobby lobby so its only usually about $10.00 for 5lbs- not bad, i think that it will be okay i do tell people that its mostly for decoration before hand though just so they dont think i have bad taste.

Use some Lorraine oils in it to mask the chemmical taste it seems to have. It is really easy to work with, and i use it for class, but wouldn't put it on a cake again. You also could try rolling it real thin so that they don't get alot of fondant with a slice of cake. Oh as far as flavor to use, use something that will compliment your cake.

I'm there with you. I use Satin Ice and would love to use Fondx but they don't carry it in my area and I'm not up for paying shipping if I order it on line. Satin Ice colors really nicely (it's also available in color, already tinted, like red, blue, green , yellow, pink, and red). It tastes really nice but it's not buttercream. Meaning that, those folks used to the melt-in-your-mouth icing will probably pick it off.

MMF tastes good, too sweet for me but so much better than Wilton fondant and it's cheap. I've made it a few times and I don't seem to get the right consistency. It's either too soft or too hard and I've had problems rolling it for bigger cakes.

I would not recommend using Wilton Fondant to cover a cake, even if you flavor it, it still tastes nasty.

I use Wilton fondant. We do about 30 fondant wedding cakes a year and find that most brides don't care what the fondant taste like. They want the look. Some brides flavor their fondant, the most used is champagne. I have used the Satin Ice chocolate and must say its great. Taste like a tootie roll. I too use the coupons from Hobby Lobby to get the best deal. icon_smile.gif

DO you remember eating play-dough as a kid? Yep.....same taste!
I don't even put it on as accent decorations....I Find that it is so chemical it permeates the cake.

HEre is your very easy solution: make Marshmallow fondant. Follow the recipe given. It is cheap (maybe 2.00 for 3 lbs of it), tastes better. The only thing I do is put about 3 or 4 TBs of crisco in it as the marshmallows are melting. It keeps the fondant pliable.

I use Wilton fondant as well and flavor it with either almond or vanilla extract. I haven't any complaints from the brides. They do a tasting before hand and know what the consistency and flavor is like. I don't think that any of them orer it for the taste, just the look and that's what I tell them. I used to make it myself, but cost and time wise it wasn't practical. I haven't tried the marshmallow fondant everyone is talking about, so maybe that'll be my next project.

I use Wilton fondant. I must say that I have never tried Satin Ice, Fondx or made MMF. Wilton is just the most convienent for me.

My son loves the Wilton fondant, but I do tell people it is just decoration. Some peel it off, others don't. I do roll it VERY thin, and put a little too much BC on to cover more of the fondant flavor.

I had seen sooooo many people complain how horrible it was, and then I tried it for the 1st time yesterday.
I didn't think it tasted as bad as everyone said it was. It has a saltwater taffy consistency and it tasted very sugar-y. It wasn't that bad

I am another one of the odd-balls that thinks that the Wilton fondant really isn't that bad, but then again, I've never covered a cake with it either. I used some of the Wilton fondant to make my dolls bodice, but I didn't have enough to do her skirt. I have made MMF but found that I either put too much icing sugar in it and it was too hard to work with or not enough and it wouldn't keep the shape I wanted for a figurine. I will try adding some shortning to it next time. Thanks for the tip.

It takes and smells VERY chemical....Ive only used it once and im not planning on ever using it again!

1/2 my family likes it as is the other 1/2 spit it out. I don't think it has a taste. It is just like sweet flavorless chewing gum. I use it for decorations. It is easy to use and cheap with the 40 percent coupon. I did not like using it on cakes but now I will if they ask for it. Mixing it with chocolate clay improves the taste some what but then it is really soft.

Well i experimented yesterday.
i put a few pulled inches of wilton's fondant out & in a plastic baggie added a few tablespoons of confectioner's sugar & a swig of clear vanilla extract !
not too bad.
i rolled it quite thin & layed it over a cupcake.
it is easy to work with & with the icing you can barely taste it.
apparently it just compliments the icing's sweetness they said !

so im not that stuck on it but i don't hate it as much.

So thanks ladies for the hints & tips.

I too had the same feeling...it can't be that bad...right? WRONG...I bought it last weekend to make life easier for a baby shower cake...yuck...Soooo glad that I'd made MMF as well!!
