Hey everyone ..
I haven't been posting here in a while -- life is way more than hectic lately -- but a student of mine had a question that i can't find the answer to!
She wants to bake a cake for her cousin's birthday this week, but her mom's oven has died!
Can she make a cake on a stove top? One of her relatives swears that she has heard of this before!
Any help -- directions -- etc -- is greatly appreciated!

I doubt you could do a regular cake. Cake needs even allover heat.
There's probably some recipe out there for a skillet cake, but it would be a different kind of dessert.
Can she use someone else's oven?
I actually saw a woman do this on a bake-off that was on the Food Network a few weeks ago. She took the batter and steamed it like you would steam dumplings. It was quite interesting.
I saw this recently in the foodnetwork channel. It was for a cake challenge. The lady who did it got the recipe from a chinese cook book. She said it was traditional for her IL's. so she thought i'd be nice for her to make it for them. Anyways, It was done over stove top. Boiling water underneath method. Sorry I forget what that's called. And it cooked, it's just not the same texture and taste. At least that's what one of the judges on the show said.
Gotta love Google:

I just posted the first one I found. There are other ones on the same site.
Ooops! never mind. It still needs to be baked.
I guess I should have read it through first!
There's also a cake that you can do on a campfire. Maybe it's using the same concept? They use a cast iron dutch oven with the lid.
Here are a bunch of different recipes...

(my pref. when camping is Dump Cake!)

You can definately bake a cake in a crock-pot. Here is a link:

Good luck!
Thank you everyone!
I sent the links along to my student. I'll let you know what she chooses and if it works!!
Doug -- my exboyfriend had one of those when went camping last year -- it makes really good brownies!
Thank you again!

Hello everyone! this is my first post in this forum and I'm very excited!
I'm from Mexico and I was visiting my grandma and she wanted to try one of my "fancy" cakes, because she found out I was studying in this patisserie school. But her oven was dead aswell so she told me I could use this pan she has to use in the stove to cook the cake. So I started making my cake from scratch, and then I poured on the pan and waited until it was cooked. Actually it was really good and tasted as well as the oven one. I'm not sure to try it at my home because I dont have those thick pans as she has but Im telling you it worked and really well.
next time just take a dutch oven and make him a cake or a pie in that!!!
there's ALWAYS a need for some kind of cake or pie!

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.........dump cake..........haven't had that in years and years...my mom used to make that when I was a kid.....I gotta try one...i've NEVER made it....would bring back so many childhood memories.....thanks Doug!
My BBQ book has recipes for cakes. You can use a gas grill or charcoal. I haven't tried it yet, though.
When I was a kid, my next-door neighbor used to make what he called a 100 layer cake. He used a 10" cast-iron skillet and cooked a pile of very thin cakes on the stove top, like pancakes. He then took his secret chocolate icing recipie and stacked all of those layers together. Each layer was about a 1/4" thick and that cake had to be 5 or 6" tall. then he would heat the chocoalte icing and pour over the top. I wish I would have paid more attention to when he made the batter and icing, as he has passed on and took his secret chocolate icing recipie with him. Even in his 90's he could still make the best chocolate cake I have ever had.
You can do it in a microwave if you have silicone or panetone molds. You can do them in the cockpot too. So "they" say.

Yes it can be done. My sister made a chocolate crockpot cake and it was tasty. I, again, almost ate the entire thing. Here is a link to the recipe.

edited to say: I forgot its not a cake you can decorate though. It the pudding cake and you just spoon out into dishes.
