I take all comments from my customers seriously and to heart. I want each and every one to be pleased with the finished products that they pick up or I deliver. I just have to remember that this MOB has never tried any of my cakes, nor has she ever been the recipient of one. I have to be honest, as upset as I was last night, I was ready to never do another wedding cake and start returning deposits from the dozen or so others already booked for this year. I have been second-guessing my abilities and questioning whether I should even be selling cakes.
Please try not to let one person's comment's destroy your confidence in yourself. I've looked at your photo's, and your cakes are great! Like you said, the MOB has not tried your cakes - so she basically doesn't know what she's talking about! Do not let these negative comments beat you! You are better than that!!!
According to the clock on my DVD player.....it's now 6:26 PM in NC. Did the Fed Ex guy come?

Kitty, they haven't paid $500 yet. MOB was "willing" to pay $500 of the $600 balance at this time. The remaining balance would be COD.

Fed-Ex did deliver today. It's at my neighbor's.
Right after the post around 10:30 this morning, the family was called in for my husband's g'mother, who is terminal, so I haven't been home to further deal with this. We just got back from visiting with her. She's pitiful. She's been given mere days at this point. I did receive another e-mail from the bride, but right now, I'm emotionally drained. I'll deal with everything tomorrow once I'm rested and have my wits back about me.
I'll try and update tomorrow...
In the meantime, any and all prayers would certainly be appreciated for DH's g'mother.

Does Fed-Ex deliver on the weekends? They don't here. And I am on pins and needles ( or cake talk Bags of icng and tips) for the "rest of the story" It is 830pm here. What gives. Hopefully you got all of this Saturdays orders done and delivered/picked up on time.

My mom passed almost 2 years ago now of lung cancer. In the end we were thankful that she went peacefully and that we were able to visit together.

I just finished reading this entire thread. Amy, I'm so sorry you've had to go through this all and now dealing with your hubby's grandmother on top of it. Sometimes it seems that life is testing us. I'm sure you'll feel better in the morning and things will look clearer to you. I've already said a prayer for your grandmother-in-law and I hope no matter if the whole check is in that FedEx envelope or not, that things work out well and go the way you want them to go.
One thing I have to say that I'm surprised no one else said earlier on when you were dealing with MOB. Being that this came down to being an issue of the contract, if it was me and I had told the MOB that the contract was between the bride and myself and I couldn't talk to her (MOB). If she had given me the hard time she gave you, I would have told her, "Fine, you hold on to the money. Make sure you give it to my ______(fill in the blank - sister, cousin, husband, etc.) and my 10 year old son. They'll be delivering and setting up the cake." I'm sure she would have questioned that, and the answer that would have come back: "Well, I know it says that I'm going to set it up in the contract and that's what I told your daughter, but something came up and I have an order that's worth more money than your daughter's so I'll be setting that one up instead." You'd be sure she'd be quoting the contract left and right at that point and that would be when I'd jump on her and say that it goes both ways.
Anyway, that's the passive agressive in me, but that's what I'd probably have done in your situation. Honestly, I think you did the correct thing and I hope no matter what the breakdown is, you are happy and don't let this experience sour you. Just chalk it up to another lesson for future reference.
so sorry to hear about the grandmother situation hope all ends well. Just a piece of advice I would take pictures before you deliver & after delivery. That way they can not come back & try to geta refund of any kind. What a nightmare.

My only bridezilla story was this.....sorry, it's long!!!!
Last year I had a bride that came in January to look at my cakes for a wedding in August. I sat with her and her fiance for over 2 hours and they didn't book but they thought they wanted me so we did up the contract and they signed everything. I said I would hold it for payment unless someone else had money to book their date and then they would get first choice. The bride said she needed to get the money from her mother. At this point they were not exactly sure of the final details of the cake and I told them they could wait until 4 weeks before the wedding to make a final decision. A few weeks later, they told me her mother would be paying for the cake and she would be sending me a check to book the date (1/2 the total cost). A month later I finally received the check and booked their date. 6 weeks before the wedding I sent out the normal invoice to the bride (and a copy to her mother since she said her mother was going to pay) to show they needed to make their final design decisions 30 days before and the balance of the cake (1/2 the total cost) would be due on so-and-so date (two weeks before the wedding). The gave me the final design a couple days after the 30 days deadline and I let that go...no biggie. For some reason, I knew I was going to have trouble getting the money, so about 5 days before the balance was due, I emailed a reminder to the bride AND her mother, just to cover all bases. On the day the balance was due, I said to my husband, that I bet I'd have to call them when I don't receive the money in the mail. The mother ended up calling me that day before the mail came and told me she would be sending out a check for the balance in two days (the following Monday). I told her she needed to pay the balance by midnight, not two days later, as per the contract or I could cancel at my discretion and they would not get their deposit back. She got upset and said....I don't understand why you can't get the money two days late. I told her that was fine as long as she understood that if that was ok, then I felt it was ok to deliver the wedding cake two days late. She ended up driving 1 1/2 hours her to deliver the check. Of course she dropped it in the mailbox and did not come to my door. She then went home and emailed me to tell me to let her know that I received the check. When I delivered the cake two weeks later, her driveway was a one-lane deep rutted path uphill with a little turn around loop at the top. I was the seventh car in the driveway, and in order to get the cake to the reception area, I had to walk past 6 cars, up a narrow driveway, then across the front yard, around the patio to the back yard, across the back yard, down a narrow footpath filled in with baseball sized limestone rocks and then across a field about 50 yards to a tent. I couldn't believe it!!!! Luckily, a couple of the groomsmen offered to help me carry the tiers. I didn't want them to help with them being in tuxes already but they insisted. Then when I left, all 6 cars in front of me had to go back out the driveway, let me out, and then reenter the driveway. I guess everyone that came to that wedding was held captive until everyone left the wedding? Oh...and they had port-o-johns beside the tent, about 10 feet from the food. Now you KNOW that bride was using a port-o-john!!!

I haven't ventured into wedding cakes yet, although I've been asked to, and never would have thought of half of the things that have happened to you, Amy, and I'm sure dozens of others on this site! I guess the saying, "It takes all kinds....." fits perfectly here. I loved it when you said:

I would just wait and when the check comes in sit on it a day or two and then send it back with a letter explaining that she broke the contract. So let's see that would be approx a week before the wedding. Let's see her find someone else to do it.
She will be kissing your feet to get you to do it

I told my mom this story and she thought it sounded reasonable for someone to think they could pay some upon delivery...that alot of contract work is like that and such...I was like, it's NOT normal with wedding cakes at all. sorry. but I guess I can see why the lady might have thought that way but still...a deal is a deal.
Okay, be definition, a "contract" is a " legally binding exchange of promises or agreement between parties that the law will enforce." What, do these people think they don't have to pay their mortage, either? It is a LEGAL DOCUMENT that can be upheld in a court of law. And I don't think I have ever heard of a judge who is swayed by whining, b!tching, or crying foul because they left their checkbook in their other Aigner pocketbook. I mean, the nerve of some people!!!
This just drives me nuts. Deposits are always late or there is always some sort of saga going on.
I had a bride book a cake with me months in advance. In the final contract I stated that the deposit was due 2 months in advance and final payment 1 month before the date. Bride did not bother contacting me after I sent her a final quote. So, I left things as is and took other orders in the mean time.
2 weeks before her wedding she sends me a mail asking about delivery arrangements for the cake. I wrote back asking 'What cake???'.
My gut feeling was that she got someone else to do the cake and they fell through and now she was trying to get me to do it. She then sent another mail asking if I could please fit her in since she forgot about the deposit. I said no and that I was fully booked and that was that.
This topic of deposits and final payment really upsets me as I don't like chasing after people for money but if I don't I know I will get burned.

I worked in a Bakery for a year and did wedding cakes.
The cake always had to be paid IN ADVANCE. She signed a contract so she needs to pay you. I think this sounds like a mother of the bride that is not going to be happy no matter how the cake looks like. I've dealt with those before so be prepared for her to complain afterwards just to get some money back. I could be wrong but this sent my blood running hot when I saw your post. Just be forwarned! Let us know how it turns out
