ok, i have to return a phone call to someone who wants me to do their wedding cake... my FIRST...yikes! I was wondering what I should be asking other than the "generic" questions. Should I be meeting her in person to discuss? Is over the phone ok to start?

any advise would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks

Congrats on your first wedding cake. I have never done a wedding cake myself. But I would ask when is the date, how many servings, what flavors, buttercream vs. fondant, designs that she had in mind. I would think meeting them in person would be best. Do NOT forget to have a contract- I have heard to many horror stories. I would also go over with the contract too- to make sure they understand it.

If you give me your email address, I will send you a copy of my cake contract.
Questions to ask:
1. date. make sure you are open for the date they pick.
2. How many people
3. Do you have an idea or pix of the cake you are interested in?
4. Round tiers or square?
5. Will you be supplying the cake top?
6. Where will the reception be held?
7. Flavor of cake
Alot of these questions I ask when I have my free consultation & cake tasting w/the couple. It is best to have a price list & flavor list typed up so you do look as professional as possible. I charge a $25.00 delivery & set up fee. I also charge extra if I am making the cake top. My flavor & price list is on my website. Helen

If you check earlene's website, she has a lot of helpful information about wedding cake contracts and consulations. I know it helped me a lot with my two wedding cakes.

Helen has got it covered. good luck on the cake!

you also might want to know the temperature and what not of the place where the cake will be held and if/how far you'll have to transport it.

Oh, and there is one more thing I always insist on telling my brides. Although I have been doing this for many years, there are still techniques I am still learning. So if it is a technique I am not comfortable with, I am up front with them. This way, they know what to expect of you, you will not be stressing out trying to do something you are not comfortable with & everyone is happy! H.

I've only done a handful of wedding cakes, however two things I've found that help. First is to ask the bride to find any and all pictures of ideas she likes. The second is to make sure you include a way to get back all of your materials that you used to set up. (stands, lights etc) Good luck!

My "day job" is event planning, and one tip I can offer is to make sure you know who your onsite event contact will be. Is she using an event planner? And onsite event manager with the venue? Will her maid of honor or bridesmaid be coordinating? Weddings can be hectic, so it's good to know who to look for when you show up to deliver your beautiful cake. Best of luck to you!
