I'm trying to make fondant animals for next weekend's cake. My hands are certainly warm, as it's about 72 in the house, but the monkeys are just drooping. I'm getting really annoyed. I added extra sugar to the fondant to make it less sticky, but it seems to get absorbed instantly.
I assume I shouldn't put them in the fridge because of the moisture.
I'm about to lose my mind! icon_cry.gif

Help? Anyone??

Oh no! Do you have a fan? Maybe that'll help'em dry out.

Sounds like your hands are too hot.

Maybe you could put your hands on ice for a few minutes at a time while you are working on them.

I opened all the windows (my allergies will HATE me tomorrow. icon_cool.gif )
I'm about to add a bunch of powdered sugar and then ice my hands!
I hope the combination will help. I really don't care what the actual characters taste like....maybe I should just use clay icon_rolleyes.gif

Thanks for the ideas.

Were your crocs from the Dora cake?? Those are really cute! I might do something like that. I had some more difficult ones, but after the whole monkey thing, I think I might go easy. LOL!
I finally did two monkeys after icing my hands and adding sugar and sitting by the window. The fondant definitely dried out, but they still drooped a bit. i guess I'll be sitting htem in a pile of leaves!
I guess I shoudl leave them out for a little longer and then wrap them up so they don't crack. What do you think?

yes they were for the dora cake.....

I didnt wrap mine I just put them on a tray and let them sit in the fridge. I didnt have any problems with cracking....
I figured that I would let the air circulate around them so they would harden a bit.....

What a frustrating endeavor...what the heck was I thinking?! icon_confused.gif

I tried all kinds of things but never got the point where the fondant friends didn't droop. Here are a few. Obviously, flat ones like a croc, and the sitting animals worked a lot better. I'll have to find another medium for the next cake if I do detailed work.

I took them out and plumped them back up and am airdrying to try and get them straigtened out.

Thanks!
No book. I've had experience with polymer clay, but it didn't melt like this. These were driving me batty.
I'm hoping that they will still look okay by next weekend when I assemble the cake.

I've been having trouble with mmfondant shapes this last week, what I did make was sinking just like your hippo did. It's been a bit humid here, so maybe that is it...but your little critters are so cute!!!! You do a great job on them.

OMG--so cute!! How did you "glue" the different pieces together(like the arms to the body, eyes to the head, etc)? Is that mmf and did you just use water or vanilla for the "glue"?

Marzipan was harder. It was really squishy, but I also knew that ahead of time and planned to make low to the ground ball-shaped animals.

I just used a tiny bit of water to "glue" them. It was Wilton fondant actually. I made some MMF for the first time and it is hard as a rock after being in my fridge overnight. I'll thaw it to cover the cake next weekend.

In addition to those, I also have elephants, zebras, a giraffe, lions (which I posted in the gallery), and a bunch of different trees and leaves.

Thanks.
