I have SEVERAL cakes to do over the next few weeks and was wondering if the frosting from Walmart or Sam's Club is any good. I can get a 28 pound bucket for $26.56! icon_eek.gif

If you have tried it personally please let me know what you think of it. I would love a short cut but don't want to risk customers with a foul tasting buttercream.

Thanks for your help! icon_wink.gif

I buy it and use it on all my cakes.........everyone that orders my cakes tells me how much they love the buttercream!! I figure if they like it, why not?? Saves me the trouble of making it and it's much cheaper than me making my own too!! I think it's pretty darn sweet, but then again it IS buttercream LOL

Thanks for the great comments! I am happy to hear that it is good because I want the shortcut...anyways. How does it have to be stored? Room temp or refrigerated? Also, how long does it last once it's opened?

store at room temp just make sure the lid is tightly sealed, and its good until the expiration date on the bucket, you might just have to mix it up a little bit.

I had no idea you could purchase their buttercream. Do you have to ask for it in the bakery or is it out somewhere?

juledcakes, do you know where we can buy the special tool it takes to open the big bucket of icing from Sams? I just bought a 28 lb. white buttercream and 28 lb. chocolate buttercream, but didn't realize I need something special to get them open. icon_eek.gif Thanks!

If it is like the old pickle buckets, you can get the tool at any restaurant supply.

I find it odd that everyone is raving about how good their buttercream is when everyone really condemns their cakes. icon_lol.gif I like their buttercream okay but have never used it myself. I also like their whipped icing.

I gotta go find some! I am looking for a good icing recipe and I can't find one I really like.

Thanks for the tip on the opener. Never condemned their cakes myself, just like making my own and doing the decorating. icon_biggrin.gif This is just a hobby for me and easier to buy the icing (I have two toddlers). I have a few cakes to make for Mothers Day at church and it was cheaper to buy the 56 (!) pounds of icing than make it. Gosh, that's a lot of icing! icon_eek.gif

i've never needed a tool to open the bucket! I got through about one bucket a month......who'd have thought someone who's not even technically in business could go through so much icing LOL

Just wondering if anyone can tell me what consistency is the buttercream? I am wondering if I can make roses with it and then thin it down to ice the cake.
Thanks so much.

The consistency is what I consider medium. My Wilton instructor had me stiffen up a small amount with cornstarch when I was working on roses. She liked the consistency of the icing right out of the bucket, too, for the other decorating we did. I guess you could also use powdered sugar if you needed a larger amout. I have also thinned it down for icing the cake. HTH

I recommend it! I just bought me some yesterday! Sometimes (like this week) I'm too lazy to make my own BCI. I use Sam's BCI a lot. I add more powdered sugar to it & also more flavoring to fit my taste. Sometimes I add milk to it too. You can play with it to have it tasting just like your own homemade icing! It's well worth it. thumbs_up.gif

Ok I don't have a Sam's card (we go to Costco) so can I get it at Walmart? Also do they have other sizes besides GIANT (56 lbs.)? lol

I have 2 special tools to open it... My DH & DS!! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif IF they aren't home & I need in the bucket I'm out of luck! I can never get it open! thumbsdown.gif

Walmart doesn't sell it. You have to ask the bakery at Sam's to get it for you. They only sell one size. The bucket I bought yesterday has an experation date of Aug something so it lasts a long time as long as it's in a cool place & the lid is on right. The whipped icing is a little smaller... ohh the whipped icing is very good too~ thumbs_up.gif

starkissdtears, good news! The 56 lbs. I referenced was for TWO buckets of 28 pounds each - one white buttercream ane one chocolate buttercream. I'm not that strong! It's only available at Sams, Walmart doesn't offer it.

About how long does it lasts? For me, it would take a good while to go thru that much icing. Also, someone qouted 28/28 of white and chocolate. Do you have to purchase it that way or can you get all white?

Angiesidea, you can get the frosting all white if you want. I just chose to buy two buckets - one of each pre-made white and chocolate for the projects I have coming up. You can just buy one bucket (28 lbs.) at a time. Each bucket has an expiration date clearly stated on the front, so ask them for a bucket with a late date on it (like when you buy milk). The ones I bought had an expiry date of three months out. I made the mistake in the past of not asking for a bucket with a late date and got home to see that I had only a month and a half to use it all up. It's so inexpensive, though, I wasn't concerned. It comes out to about 95 cents per pound.

Too funny! I'll have to come up with something as my DH travels way too much and it's when he's out of town that I'm able to decorate to my heart's content without feeling like I should be spending time with him! I think I saw the tool for sale in the past at sugarcraft.com for about $4. It's referenced as the tool that opens 5-gallon buckets, I believe. I'll have to check that out.

Jsowards said it is about 95 cents a pound. All I know is that it's worth it when you have no time to make the icing your self. $26 is cheap! The bettercream is cheaper~ icon_smile.gif

My special tool, snap the plastic , grab the pliers and pull hard. I usually have to have my DD sit on the bucket while I pull the tab so I don't jerk the bucket across the floor. My DH just stands back and laughs at us.

Cost wise, it is definitely worth it. Oh, the cream cheese icing they sell by the bucket is really good too!

When I "roughly" add up the cost of ingredients for one batch of buttercream, I come up with a rough estimate of $7 if I am using real butter. Does anyone know how many "batches" you would get out of 28 pounds?

I purchased my frosting from a Wal-Mart Super Center, not Sam's. You can purchase it by the pound, they just put mine in the deli containers. I purchased their Rich's Buttercream and the Rich's Bettercreme, they are both good. Just call ahead of time to make sure there is someone in the bakery that can help you.

I would say you could ice at mininum about 15 9" double layer cakes.......easily........I pay about 5 bucks to make buttercream from scratch and I think it is definitely worth it...........you're talking 15-20 normal batches of bc icing.

what's 28 lbs..........like 56 cups of icing????

Hey sprtd76,
Does the cream cheese icing from Sam's have to be refrigerated?
I use the Sam's buttercream. I have a toddler and very little time to make icing for practicing or decorating. It is a time saver. My step-father always asks me to bring him a large bowl of it when we visit. He loves it!!! I haven't told him it comes from Sam's. HA!!! shhh.gif

I'm sorry, but is it worth it to buy from Sam's Club or to make your own?
