Can Anyone Explain How This Might Have Happened?

Incidences like this are exactly why some states have such harsh regulations on home bakeries

I'm a cat lover and I also vote for rebaking everything.

I currently have 7 cats in my house (4 permanents, 2 temporary while my daughter moves and 1 foster). When I'm caking, everyone is locked away in their respective rooms until the last cake is picked up.

When I did my first wedding cake I invested in a large Rubbermaid (6 foot) cabinet to store the cake layers. I still use it to store cake layers, decorations, etc. that I want to protect from contamination.

Great idea! icon_wink.gif I might try that, if I can find the room for one! Wonder if I could steal a corner of the basement from my hubby? icon_rolleyes.gif

I, too, love and have 3 cats. I would rebake all three (sorry...I know it sucks!) That does look like a cat lick. Also, I feel like I'm always vacuuming and cleaning, but that darn cat hair gets everywhere. I NEVER leave any cakes uncovered in my house. Not only afraid the cats will lick them, but afraid of floating cat hair. I'd store them in cake boxes over night next time...IMO.
Sorry this happened to you! Good luck.

how strange!! maybe you have a poltergeist!! I've had a few disasters with holes in icing (never that misterious) and i normally fill it in with a bit of icing and use the tiniest amount of water to smooth it in. you'd never know there was ever a hole!

(been there ~ that is how I KNOW that is what it is - cat is now locked up anytime there is a cake in the house)

i totally agree!!! I have two little devils here that would'nt blink an eye at doing this so neatly!!!!! Then if they could they'd blame the dog... icon_biggrin.gif

I've bought sterilite containers to keep all of my cakes in. You can get them at wal-mart super cheap.. I also refridgerate EVERYTHING.. This way I don't have to worry about hair or dust. It's harder for me to keep up w/the cleaning as I have ALL hardwood flooring.... It's lovely flooring, but a pain in the butt to keep up!!! I've got the bf trained well.. He's my surface cleaner and knows that he CANNOT sweep during baking, filling or frosting times. As soon as the cake goes in the fridge out he comes w/the broom.
I sweep and vacuum and dust ALL of the time, I couldn't imagine anyone getting a hair in anything.. I'd be mortified!!!!

Oh wow. Just saw your post. So sorry that happened to you, but I agree it was the cat. Cats love cake for some reason (and English muffins ?!) It might be a good idea to rebake - definitely not sanitary. If I even think my cat got near any food in the house - it goes in the garbage (not the cat LOL)! He's really pissed at me right now b/c it's been raining all day and I've been baking, so he's not allowed in - probably not for a few days until I finish prepping a wedding cake for next weekend. He's basically an outside cat - quite a hunter - but in the winter or if its rainy he stays in. Anyway, if it were me, I'd rebake all three cakes. God forbid someone got sick or found cat hair in their cake! That could ruin your reputation.

I have 3 cats myself and looking at your picture that is a SNEAKY little cat you have.... My cats have gotten a hold of a cake I did and looks lot like that one did... They licked it to the cake clean as can be nice and neat... Kinda like they were all licking their way into a Heaven of Swetness..lol

Re-bake for sure I know people whom are allergic to cats are really affected by the saliva pallets of a cat.. My friend for some reason my cat loves to lick her and she would break out in a huge rash... We keep the cats put in their cat room while she is here. Yes the cats have their on cat room. Anyway I would be afriad someone would bite into that cake and WOW break out with welps in their mouth.. Then you have real problems...
But from the looks of it you had those cakes nice and smooth... Sorry you have to rebake I know its a lot to do but it will cut your stress down knowing noone is going to swell at the mouth or something when they taste your cake..... Go stress free just re-bake!

This looks exactly like a whole my cat licked into one of my cakes. Cats are very stealth! I bet that's what happened. I would just pipe in a patch and smooth it out. Great cakes by the way!! icon_biggrin.gif

I started making cakes about 12 years ago, after I got married. Then I somehow got into the hobby/business of breeding Ragdoll kittens!
So needless to say, I ditched the cake decorating after that.

It was just rediculous to think that cat hair wasn't gonna contaminate the cakes eventually, no matter how I cleaned everything. Now thank goodness, I don't breed cats anymore, but I work in an actual bakery. Still have 3 cats, and wouldn't trust my home kitchen for a wedding cake. You just never know...
I still have to watch out picking up the cats before I go to work...the hair just goes everywhere on me!

Sounds like the attack of the giant Cat strikes again. LOL...

Next time lock your cakes up where the pets can't assault them while you are away.

Cake_Princess, you aren't the only one that can't see the cakes, I had it taken off...I sometimes show "customers" my cakes from there, and didn't think it would look very good to have a picture like that on there with comments regarding the cat licking the icing. They were posted back at the first of June...sorry you didn't get to see them. I've learned my lesson, and the cakes are now securely locked in a closet, well away from my cake icin eating cake!
