is this the recipe used?
http://cakecentral.com/cake_recipe-1603-0-Rolled-Buttercream-Icing-Recipe.html
1 cup solid vegetable shortening
1 cup clear corn syrup
1/2 teaspoon colorless butter flavoring
1 teaspoon colorless vanilla flavoring
1/2 teaspoon popcorn salt (fine grain salt)-
(I use regular salt and grind it in my
morter and pestal)
7-8 cups (approx. 2lbs.) powdered sugar
This recipe should be made with a heavy-duty
mixer. The paddle, not the wire whip,
should be used.
1. Place the shortening and corn syrup in a mixing bowl and beat until creamy.
2. Add flavorings and salt and beat until blended.
3. Mix in powdered sugar, pouring it in the bowl over about a 30 second period, and blend thoroughly, approx. 30 seconds to one minute after the last bit of sugar is added.
4. Turn incing onto your work surface and knead until smooth and well blended.
5. Store icing in sealed plastic bag then place bag in airtight container let sit for about 30 minutes.
Icing can be refigerated for several weeks or frozen for several months. Let icing come to room temperature before using.)
To test for readiness: Pull the icing apart. If it stretches when pulled apart the icing is too soft*. When you are sure that icing is not too soft, gently stroke a portion of the icing with the palm of your
hand. If all cracks and marks disappear and the surface appears shiny, it is ready to use. If the cracks do not disappear, the icing is too firm**.
*If the icing is too soft and sticky and
stretches when pulled apart, knead in
additional powdered sugar 1/2 cup at a time.
**If the icing is too firm and cracks and
marks will not disappear, knead in a few
drops of water until the proper consistency
is achieved.
To color the ENTIRE batch of Icing: Mix the color with the shortening and corn syrup mixture BEFORE adding the powdered sugar.
To color samll portions of Icing:Mix the color to the center of a ball of icing.
Knead the color in until well blended. If the color softens the icing, knead in more powdered sugar.
To cover a cake you use the same method as if using rolled fondant.

thanks!

I have not used the recipe yet but it sounds like it. Let us know how you like it when you try it out. I'm trying to go through the many cookie icings I have and decide which works best and tastes best. I'm on a mission!
I wonder, is it possible to make this without a KA?
kos
Kos - i have only tried Toba's, i took her class. I also want to try all the icings to see which is best. oh i just remembered, i also tried the chocolate clay (i think it's what's called) and fondant, also in her class. Those i like, very easy to work with, less mess!
Now I have tried mmf this is next on my to do list... Kos have you tried mmf yet?
I bought the marshmallows. That's as far as I've gotten.
I's skeered!! The directions sound kind of complicated.
kos
they arent.. melt marshmallows, add to powdered sugar... knead the crap out of it and there you go...If its too dry knead in a fw drops or so of water and use shortening on the board and on your hand to avoid sticking - Oh I lamost forgot.. an amke sure your bowls you melt mm and put ps in are greased.. thats it
Kos,
You should try mmf, it's so much fun!! It is a little sticky while you are mixing it (did I say a little?). But once you let it set and cool, it is really great!!
I made some GORGEOUS musical notes frosted with MMF in hot pink, aqua and black. I loved the technique of cutting out the icing using the same cutter the cookie was cut out with. They were so precise and beautiful. I ate one. Thought it was dry, boring and...well...awful. Threw the whole batch out. I urge you to try this on your family before you take them somewhere to make sure you like them. .I'm kind of funny about cookie icing, though. I really dislike royal icing on cookies, and I seem to be in the minority - so maybe it's just me.

I'm in the minority too, I don't care for the taste of royal. I think it's more a texture thing. What is your favorite icing so far Crimsicle?
kos
Crimsicle, I have only used Alice's icing, and I think it is delish. It tastes buttery to me. Have you tried it?
