I have a sign on my desk that totally fits this situation:
"A Lack Of Planning On Your Part
DOES NOT
Constitute An Emergency On My Part"
You were so right to say no to her. Next time it could be dropping by at midnight for a cake needed to be taken to work at 6am. Some People!!!
I'm usually non-confrontational, but if someone did that to me I would say, you know how to read, find a recipe and make your own cake. lol
Of course, I'm lying. What I'd actually have done is gone to the window and just thrown a cook book at her - you know like when you see old movies/cartoons where they throw shoes at loud cats so they can get some sleep.
I'm still ticked off at her for you!
Sheesh. I don't even answer the door unless I've showered and have had my morning coffee. You do not want to deal with me (or see me for that matter, LOL!) before then.
Like keoni cakes said - someone better be delivering a prize or bleeding profusely to be knocking on my door at that hour.
Anyways, good on you for standing your ground - I have problems with the 'NO' word.....and a lot of ppl I know are aware of this
She was trying to catch you completely off balance to get her own way.
Isn't the word NO such a lovely word to learn?
I woulda said (yaaawwwwnnnn, smack, smack, with my hair all tussled n mangled,) "You want what, when?" "mmmmmmmm, let me think on this (as I scratch my butt) ummm nope!" "But Walmart is open and I am sure they can sell you a cake."
I close the door n scratch my tussled hair in amazement at some people's lack of planning, as I walk back in nothin but my nightees n pink slippers to the computer where I can tell all my c.c. buds about this strange womans request. LOL
Souds like she really thought and expected you would do this for her. Somehow she got this idea in her head. Is it possible someone had mistakenly mentioned that you had this type of availablility?
WELL NOW.....we may disagree about alot of things...scratch vs. mix, homebaker vs. bakery...but there is one thing I can see we agree on, Don't show up at a CC member's house at 6am wanting a cake
LOL I love it that when I get home from delivering a cake other people share my dislike of this woman!!! All I can think is someone told her about me, and she probably forgot, and this morning on her way through town she decided OH CAKE and stopped at the local grocery store where she thought if she bought all the supplies and brought them to me that I would definately do it....well her @ss was dead wrong thats all I can say. While I was driving this morning I thought "Wonder who had the kahunas to tell her to come see me this morning???" Oh well they probably told her and like I said she forgot the cake (why forget the MOST important part of the dinner...DESSERT ) .
At 6am I would have let my Mastiff answer the door (completely harmless, would trade you all my valuables for a dog treat any day) but he barks loudly, because he wants you to open the door and play with him. Not to mention his sheer size is rather intimidating.
And no...I would not be making you a cake or even giving you directions to Walmart!
That's so crazy its almost funny! Nobody at our house is up at 6am and since dh can jump out of bed faster than me he would have been the one to answer the door...and no telling what he would have thought! I guess I don't know anybody who would do something that weird anyway...thankfully!
Good for you .You did the right thing.I am a people pleaser (which annoys the heck out of my DH).and I know saying No is not easy.Well done .I am doing a wedding cake for free for some one I met once.
That is so bizarre!
I'm not even awake at 6am, let alone answering the door.
That woman has a serious lack of social skills!
I'm SO glad you said "no!"
Sheesh. I don't even answer the door unless I've showered and have had my morning coffee. You do not want to deal with me (or see me for that matter, LOL!) before then.
I'm almost 50. I'm fat. I sleep naked. No....you DON'T want me to answer the door at 6 a.m.! Especially to a request like that.

ROTFLMAO
Good for you for saying no and letting her know that the doormat is outside the house, not inside. If my doorbell rings at 6 a.m. it better be either Publishers Clearing House with my million dollar check, or Ty Pennington and the Extreme Makeover Home Edition crew. I am NOT Miss Congeniality that early in the morning.
My daughter sleeps until 8 am - therefore so do I! Knock on my door at 6 am you better have something really important to say (emergency) or be holding a large check with a large amount of money on it!
If not - watch out what might come out of my mouth!
I can see the headlines now... "Local woman pelted with her own eggs by crazy cake lady!"
If I woke someone up at 06:00 am for a cake, I would'nt have the nerve to actually eat it! Are you sure this is Almonds? I can't help but wonder if she now realizes just how rude that was? I would love to hear the reaction of the people she complains to about this - as long as she includes "oh yah, I knocked on her door at 06:00 am the day before it was due - with all the ingredients and she still said no!"
The fact that she had groceries with her tells me she knew before hand. I'm not sure about your area, but the stores in my area are not open until 07:00 at the earliest. If anyone shows up at my door at that hour - with groceries in tow, it had better be to make my entire family breakfast and the coffee had better perfectly brewed! Even then I'd be annoyed ... just the thought of it !
Update: Yesterday when I delivered the preschool celebration cake her DIL ordered a 8th Grade grad cake frome me lol....I don't know if she knows what her MIL did or not but I do know she has had choice words before for her
I would have said a definite no, you really did do the right thing. Some people have a lot of nerve and have no idea what it takes to make a really good cake - they are often the first to criticise when it isn't quite what they wanted too.
I will stop now as I am ready to rant just thinking about it - good on you.
I wish I had your courage to say no. I got a phone call at 10pm last night asking me to do a cake for Thursday with Concord on it! I already have 3 cakes this week but still felt obliged to say yes because she is my bro's best friends wife & I didn't want to cause any ill feeling.
Well done you for standing up to her & saying no. Could you please give me some lessons on how to the same?
Get sick and tired of people taking advantage of you...then you will tell them no!
You can do it....JUST SAY NO!!! lol

IS SHE GOING TO PAY YOU???????? I think you are going to start to feel taken advantage of eventually if you arent getting paid...Even if they have the decency to ask you and order it ahead of time.
but the MIL???? Whaaaaaat????
Since this is for school I get supplies for free and they always give me a decent "tip" like 25 bucks or something. I don't get this often, I get a lot of experience but not a lot of money
Im telling you....eventually you arent going to want to do it for "tips" anymore and it will get hard to tell them you are charging! Believe ME! I went through that with a friend. I didnt know how much to charge so she started paying me $15 for an 8 inch cake, that I would probably spend $8-10 in supplies for and 4 hours of work. So after making a $1.50 an hour for awhile I was getting resentful. I mean here I was spending all my free time either shopping, or baking or decorating. I wasnt spending time on my family or working on my house etc. At first it was fine for the experience, but after awhile it takes a toll. It wasnt really her fault, i just never spoke up. Still I am getting next to nothing for my time, but at least it is better than before. Think of it this way. Many of these people asking of cakes are working people. Are they working for free? HECK NO!! Sorry, just my little rant. Just dont want you to go down that path that so many of us have gone down before! Your cakes are great and you should get paid for them. Good LUCK!
WHAT THE HECK?!?!?!?!! Did she think it was April Fool's Day? I totally agree with you and everybody else on this thread (esp. SugarPlumFairy and KeoniCakes). There was NO other answer but NO! EVEN if she were a "paying" customer, her actions would have been completely ludicrous! I have had to turn down paying cake orders because they are too last minute. I tell those people that it makes me extremely sad that I am not going to be able to do their cake because I am over-booked. My regulars know I like at least two weeks notice. I tell them they are doing me and themselves a great service by providing me with ample time. I can, not only schedule them ahead of would-be last minute orders, but also give them the most for their money (like making decorations that need Time to set up!). Last month I took an order from someone new only because I had the time and wanted to make another potential "regular", but I still told them about my two week notice preference. They called me this month with another order for three weeks from now--see? we are both made happy!
Merissa is totally right! They are gonna burn you of your love for cake decorating and NONE of us would want that for you! Your time and talent are worth so much! I only make free cake for loved ones and I've even had to say no to them before when it's last minute. They understand but I had my sis's SIL look at me with puppy dog eyes and say, "Please, don't make us do that again."-referring to eating Wal-mart cake. I said sorry and told her to talk to my sis about it (last minute party-planner ). Seriously, though, they know the deal!
In reference to church lady, you were absolutely right. She was lucky you answered the door! Then she was lucky you aren't a donkey like her and spell out her indiscretion to her. If she hasn't learned good manners and consideration by this time in her life, who knows if there is any hope?
