Maybe you can somehow use the new ribbon pan? They just came out at our Michaels here. Anything bright and cheerful with her favorite colors is good, too! You can't go wrong.

You could do the emblem of the branch of the military that he is in.
I did several cakes that had a FBCT of the yellow ribbon when my husband's brigade came home. If you go into my profile & then to my old posts, I believe the picture is in my first post.
I used one of the car ribbon magnets as my template and then put it on the cake. My handwriting wasn't very good then but I wanted to write on the ribbon after I put it on the cake.
