I would love to hear your story on how you got into cake decorating. Did you get into it for fun, money, own your own business?


I just started decorating, I wanted to make my kids birthday cakes. I also was told by my grandma, that if I took classes, I could have all of her wedding pans, molds, everything she has collected over the past 30 years.

How about you?

I have always dabbled in baking and was totally fascinated by cake decorating.


Last year I was sitting on the sofa with my MIL (we were in the midst of catering a wedding for 150) and we were watching food network! They were showing someone doing gumpaste flowers....this was the first time I had ever seen them. I was totally awe struck and new right then and there that was what I had to do!! I remember looking at my MIL and saying to her..." I want to do that...NO! I have to do that"!!!

I sign up for Wilton classes and took all three of them...anxiously waiting for someone/anyone to teach me how to do gumpaste flowers! But, I only learned hot to do the roses....they didn't have the gumpaste course then. So, I sat down with a book and some tool and basically taught myself. I've also PM'ed plenty of people to help me and of course I read alot of the web.

Hopefully sometimes in the very near future I will be doing this out of my home. I can not believe how much I love it. It like one of the best things that I've ever done for myself.

I was watching the Food Network, I saw Bobby Flay's Throwdown show. He was going to be baking a cake. He is a chef but said that he didn't have much experience with baking. I saw what he came up with and told my hubby that night that I was going to bake a cake the next day. From that moment on - I was addicted! I found this site right away and here I am now.

I am hoping that one day I will be good enough to start up my own business, how awesome would that be?! I finally found something (I'm a SAHM) that is a great hobby, I could make some money, and stay home with my kids. And maybe just maybe, I will mamke some money doing it too one day!!

I have always had an interest in cake decorating, but when I lived at home my mom wasn't too thrilled about me messing up her kitchen. So, I stopped. I eventually moved out and in with my husband (we've been together a total of 10 years ) Anyways, he made the mistake of encouraging me to take classes for my interest about 2 years ago, so I did at a local craft store. Poor guy, if he'd only known the addiction I would get to decorating cakes!!!

I was very lucky...I started baking when I was young. My mom asked a lady from church to teach me to decorate. She taught me on a 4-5 tiered wedding cake. I practiced for a while. Got better at icing the cakes. But didn't decorate much until I had my first son. After that I looked for every book on decorating I could get my hands on. Now I have an extensive library on cake decorating. And have instilled my love of sugar to both of my boys. Got to love it.

I got into it by accident. My former boss( I used to have an outside job, now I'm just a kept woman!!LOL) thought it would be fun to take the class. We just did it for something to do. I ended up really enjoying it and when I quit my regular job, word got out that I did cakes (I live in a very small town) and since then, I've been doing orders from home. I would love to have my own shop, but finances won't allow that right now, so for the time being I'm happy doing my 4 or 5 cakes a month.

When I was about 23, my grandmother told me she wanted to take the Wilton class. They had an offer for pay one/get one free for the course and she didn't want to go alone. I agreed just to make her happy and to spend some time with her; didn't really think I'd be doing it anymore after that. I fell in love. I don't think she ever decorated many more cakes after our class, but I could not stop! They didn't offer all the gumpaste and fondant classes then either. So I just kept on practicing and reading and teaching myself. There is sooo much more I want to know how to do. ( I just recently found Cake Central and am addicted.) I would so love to know how to work with sugar (pulled, blown and cast) and chocolate, as well. My grandmother isn't here anymore, but I thank her all the time for the gift she gave me almost 15 years ago. I hope she knows what she did for me...

Ive always been into cooking... my great grandmother and my grandmother were both decorators, my mom never took it up, my grandmother taught me and about a year ago i picked it up again ( as something to do while my dd slept) i still love it, i found this site and now if im not baking in my spare time my dd and i are lounging on the couch surfing this website

I've always loved to cook and used to bake the odd cake, but really got started with the decorating when I did my DD's birthday cakes. Then one for a friend's DD, and that's when I found CC, which is probably what got me well and truly hooked on this!

Now I do all my nieces and nephews' cakes and am in the process of setting up my own business!

I had just quit a grocery store bakery job (NOT decorating) when my friend asked me if I wanted to take Wilton course l. I did and so did my daughter. All 3 of us went together for l & ll. I started baking cakes for practice then giving them away. When I worked at another job I asked the boss if I could do monthly BD cakes for the store. He said. "Sure. Who'd turn down free cake?! Haha so true, right? That led to some orders and I am lovin' it!
