I found a recipe for a chocolate mocha cake online that I've been wanting to try, and finally had an opportunity this afternoon. I don't actually like coffee myself, but it is a flavor that I wanted to offer to my customers. So, I made the cake and tasted it tonight, and to be honest, I can't taste any coffee. ??? Here's the recipe I used, from the Kraft foods website. I must say, the cake is terrifically moist, great texture, etc!

1 chocolate cake mix
1 (4 serving) box of chocolate pudding mix
4 eggs
8 oz. sour cream
1/2 cup butter, melted (recipe called for oil, but I like using butter better)
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup General Foods International, any coffee flavor- (I used Suisse Mocha)
4 oz. chopped semi-sweet chocolate

I skipped the flavored whip cream frosting they suggest because I made it in a bundt pan.

So, all of you mocha cake people, I've never had mocha cake before, are you supposed to be able to taste the coffee? Should it be strong or just a hint? This cake is delicious, but I don't want to offer it as a mocha cake if it's not 'right' for what you'd expect from a mocha cake. Thanks a bunch!

As someone who loves coffee in any form, shape, or fashion ( thumbs_up.gif ), I would say that you should at least be able to taste it a little. I think it's personal preference as to how much mocha flavor a cake should have. Maybe you can add a mocha frosting to it to make up for the lack of mocha taste in the cake itself. icon_smile.gif

Thanks PinkPanther! DH pointed out that I used a 'chocolate' flavored coffee, so the taste was really masked. It does have more of a coffee aftertaste, and a little stronger flavor after sitting overnight. I think your idea of a mocha frosting sounds great too! I'll give that a try.

It's funny, I LOVE the smell of coffee. Could hang around outside of Gloria Jean's at the mall all day long, but to drink it? Uh, not for me thanks! LOL

Yep, your chocolate-flavored coffee was probably the culprit! icon_lol.gif Hope the mocha frosting works out to your liking!
