Transporting Cakes

A few questions:

1. A friend wants me to make a small sheet cake and then take it to a party 4 hours away. I'm worried the heat (we're in Texas) will cause the icing to melt even with the A/C on b/c the sun still beats down through the windows. She said maybe she could put it into a cooler. Yay or nay?

2. What is the best way to transport tiered and stacked cakes? What do you put them in and on?

I live in in Arizona and I have delivered cakes in the middle of summer without any problems. I cool the car down before putting the cake in it and I chill all my cakes. Arizona is pretty dry most of the time so I don't have issues with cakes sweating.

I deliver all wedding cakes already stacked. My car has a rug with a non-skid surface so I use that when delivering wedding cakes. I don't box my wedding cakes becuase I don't want to risk bumping them.

icon_smile.gif I deliver in Texas frequently. My windows on the sides and rear have that limo tint, I always cool the car down at least 10 minutes before I leave. I do not as a rule transport stacked cakes. If I have a 6 tier cake, I may transport the tiers in two's, and then put them together when I get on location. I always put the cakes in boxes and use the non-skid shelf liner to place under the boxes. If you are concerned you may put a smaller cake in an igloo cooler with those pre-frozen ice packs, just lay a towel on top of the packs first. It should keep your cake fine. The heat in Texas can be brutal and is always a concern,especially in July and August.Good Luck.
