I am thinking that they're "full size" sheetcake is not going to actually feed 96 people though. A full size at walmart is something like 10x16....

I shows two year old grocery store cupcakes. They look just as they did the day they were bought, funny story. I don't think anyone would buy a store bought cake after reading this

A full sheet at Walmart in my town is $35 and is 16x24. I worked at the bakery for four yours and the previous posters are correct when they say that Walmart sells cake at a loss. I did the ordering for my department. A case of six 1/2 sheet cakes cost the store $120.
Your right, they get bulk frozen cakes and thaw, along with pre-made icing, that is nasty, I worked for them for a split second before I came to my senses, they don't care what the cakes look like, they just want you to push them out, I happier to do my own with quality ingredients and if my friends and family wnat them I do them......

I find this hard to believe. I don't know who your Walmart ordered from, but I know most Walmarts order from true wholesalers and pay in the $38-$40 range for six 1/2 sheet cakes.
No walmart does in fact make their own cakes. A very good friend of mine works at a walmart bakery and she is one of them that makes cakes. She tried to open a bakery of her own but in our small town it wasn't paying. She workes in a bigger town at walmart and they are amazing!! I wouldn't buy a cake from any baker but walmart. Never once have we had a dry cake EVER!! Those of you who are bashing you are just doing that to be cruel. They are inexpensive and a great product.
"Make" and "bake can be 2 different things. Are you telling us that your friend cracks eggs and fills pans with batter? Or just pulls the cake from the freezer, icing, from the bucket, and assembles and decorates a cake.
AI have worked at Biggs, Remke, Meijer and Walmart. I hated every last one of them, and I had to wear a coat into the freezer, haul out big heavy boxes of frozen cake and slop crappy icing on them, smear coloring on them as fast as possible and sling them into case.
There is NO FREAKING WAY that anyone at any Walmart cracks an egg, measures anything, or bakes any cakes.
I am pretty sure they are like winn dixie and publix....they are ordered frozen and decorated once they are ordered. I had no idea until the manager of the bakery told me. Makes me wonder just how long those cakes have been frozen. ugh

Given Walmart's sophisticated supply chain I would be surprised if they were frozen for any longer than a month or so. Depending on the recipe, a cake can be frozen 6 months or more without losing quality.
AI work at a Safeway bakery(something I am not proud to say) and our sheet cakes run at about 50-60 dollars. Although like people have said about other stores they come in frozen and shrink wrapped. Out buttercream is made from this mix type thing. Even for that price I have interest in eating the cake we sale which is sad to say.

I don't think you have any reason at all to say it's not something you're proud of..it's not like you are responsible for how Safeway (or any other type of bakery like this, walmart etc) operates their bakery, how they 'bake' (or defrost) their cakes or what icing they use, etc. It's not your own bakery or business plan/model..it's a giant corporations so they're going to make industrial cakes.
You're doing your job- and I don't think that's anything to feel badly about. jmo

it isn't necessarily that I am feel bad about working there and saying that am not proud to work there may not have been the best way to put it. It is hard to explain because I do enjoy my job for the most part. And when it comes to all the other stuff I am not happy about like you stated It isn't my bakery anyways. I will say however I do enjoy our colossal chocolate cake. :)
They probably don't cost walmart much in terms of wages either. I saw a job posting for Costco when I was in school. They paid a dollar above minimum wage and required applicants to be able to assemble and mask FOUR entire cakes per hour.
Walmart ) cake may not be the best quality, but I wouldn't go as far as to say that for some people (the people who buy cakes at Walmart) only care about the price. I bet you dollars to doughnuts that if that woman could have afforded to spend $65 on a cake specially made, then she would have. But for most people, including myself, that kind of money could break the bank. If all she had to go on was grocery store prices, I don't think its any wonder that she expected the cake to be cheaper. It is not that people are willing to sacrifice quality for price---some people have to.
