I will be using fondant for the first time this week in my course 3 class! I bought the 5lb box of Wilton...I've heard how bad it is, but before trying MMF, I wanted to see what the consistency is supposed to be, and what to do with it.

So...now that I bought it, what do I do? icon_razz.gif I just start beating on the fondant brick, and try to make it pliable? Is that right?

LOL...I'm clueless!

That's a good idea, Juli. I have only used the Wilton fondant once too, also for my course III, but I'm glad I did because then I knew how to use the MMF when I made it (it's all I use now!).

What are you wanting to do with it? Just play around before your class? If you knead it and just play with it for awhile, the heat from your hands will make it pliable.

Yeah, class is tomorrow night and the instructor said to play with it and get it pliable. I also have to color some pink for the bow on the square cake from the 2nd lesson.

I LOVE the look of fondant, but am terrified of it, since it's new to me!

I've never used fondant before either. How do you color it? Do you just add the paste coloring and keep kneading it until its all mixed in?

I have a Nemo cake to do a week from Sat and I was thinking of using the fondant for the tail and top fin.

Right you are...just dip a toothpick in your paste coloring and kead it into the fondant. If you want a marble look, just partially knead in the color...it turns out pretty cool!

Thanks MrsMissey, I'm thinking of giving the fondant a try since I'm only using a little it will give me a feel for using it and I won't ruin a whole cake.

I was terrified of fondant before I used it in my Course III class too but now...well, I LOVE IT!!!!! It's like playdoh for cake decorators....it really is so much fun! I like the MMF so I only used the Wilton for my class and since then I've used the MMF. You are going to love it!!

I love it, too. I've been fine with the Wilton kind. Doesn't take great, but usually I'm going for appearance and find that easy to work with icon_cool.gif
I think I will try the MMF, soon though. It would be nice to have one that actually tastes good!
I love fondant because it is so much like polymer clay and I've played with that a lot. Just add color a little at a time and knead until it's not marbled anymore (unless you want marbled, which can be cool, too). You'll get a quick feel for how much color you need. I use the pastes and they work well.

Ooohhh thanks everyone, I think I'm going to give it a try!!

How long does fondant take to dry? Will it get really hard or just kind of hard?

I'm sure when I get some tonight I'll pick up a book too so that will help me out too.

With not ever using fondant what is the "must haves" I'll need to buy? Do I absolutely need to buy the small rolling pin or would my old fashion rolling pin do?

I just used my plain old wooden one and it worked just fine. Be sure to use crisco on the mat to keep it from sticking!

I played with it last night.

Colored some of it pink for the bow for my cake...it wasn't as hard as I expected it to be.

I'm looking forward to playing with it tonight.
