What i would do is when people ask when i will be opening i would say that i am working on that but for now to make extra cash to start the biz i am selling out of my home. maybe that would give them the hint. Or dont even wait for them to ask, just in conversation mention it. HTH

Once you are legal, when they ask for a cake, say "now that i have a business, for that kind of cake, I charge, XX dollars". Offer a discount only if you want to.

I live in Culpeper and got "certified" in March. You can call Dept of Ag in Richmond (804) 786-3520 and they will send you a packet of info, containing minimum requirements. You are not suppose to sell any goods until you are inspected, which I found very easy.
Other than the obvious cleaning, make sure all light fixtures are covered, thermometers in freezer and frig, you'll need to get a water sample, diagram of processing and storage areas, recipes for everything your selling along with steps in doing so and no animals in the house. This isn't everything, but this is the basics. Hope this helps, btw where in Va are you?
Thanks Joanne

Just to add onto TastersDelight's message, I also had my first inspector check my bathroom to make sure I had paper towels available instead of hand towels. This last inspection that I had, the inspector asked for a product sample as well that was tested for "filth". Everything was bagged and tagged like evidence and I had to initial it. My DH said that he just wanted some free cake. LOL The only problem that I've had is my water. I'm on a well and have to occasionally pour bleach in to eliminate coliform bacteria. They say that it is very common but usually not harmful.
