I'm a self professed newby in search of help. I love whimsy cakes using what looks like fondant or gum paste balls on the end of spiraled wire. Big question.... what kind of wire is being used? I want to try this for a Mothers Day cake. Big thanks in advance!

I am not sure, since I have never done one. I figure it is probably floral wire. Just wanted to welcome you to CC. I am still a beginner and have learned a lot from this site. The warning about it being addictive is true. I am on here every free moment I have. Hopefully someone with more experience will be able to answer your question.

It is floral wire but there is an issue with rust. Tip your wire in fondant (however much is going into your cake). Or slide a piece of straw into the cake and then put your wire in that. You dont eat the straw or the "tube" of cake in the straw so it's safe.

Welcome to CC! I use floral wire, though before I had access to that I used colored paper clips that I bent to the way i wanted. Those were kinda cute. You do wanna make sure that you use a straw in the cake to support the wire so it doesn't tear through the cake. Kinda like a hidden vase for the wire.

So glad I came across this thread today as I have got an order for the Tink cake from the new 2008 Wilton Book for the end of this month and there
are wires that have to be inserted into the cake.
Thanks guys, you learn something new everyday!!
