I haven't tried it yet, but i think "The cake Bible" by Rose Levy is suppose to be really good for scratch.
As for the cake mix doctor. I have tried a few and i wasn't impressed, but the people that ate them, loved them. I thought they were dry, but everyone else said they were really moist (guess i am used to my really really moist cakes)
So I would suggest trying a few and seeing how you like them
