and am looking for ideas. The client doesn't really know what she wants. She says elegant--not goofy. She wants bc flowers because they LOVE icing! (that's a first for me!! lol!)
I'm doing a 12" and 6 or 8" square stacked construction.
I was thinking of doing a graduation-type deco on one side of the square and a b-day deco on the other.
Any good ideas? I'm hoping for something EASY since I will be alone with the kids for the entire weekend this one is due!
YAY, though, another paying customer!!!!

I racked my brain for a unique idea for a high school graduation cake. I am doing a grad cake for the daughter of one of the secretaries in my office. I asked her to bring in an invitation and if at all possible a tassle from her daughter's cap. What I have decided to do is a sheet cake with a bc frozen transfer of the grad invitation. The invitation noted that the class flower is a white rose and the class song is Freebird. Not much that I could do with Freebird but the white roses I jumped all over. I am doing a half ball in the upper left hand corner and making a grad cap and using the actual tassel that she provided, placing the bc frozen "announcement" on the right (enlarged about 200%) and of course wherever I can - white roses. It took me a while to figure out, but I got it.
Just keep thinking and talking with these ladies and it will come together.
Good Luck,
Lisa
Make your buttercream roses ahead of time, when your other half is there to help with the kids, and freeze them so that all you have to do is place them on the cake on the day you are decorating them.
That's all I can think of right now..
I made my last batch of roses ahead of time and froze them, but much to my disgust, surprise, disappointment......., they picked up the flavor of something in my freezer. I covered them with Sara Wrap (now I use only Press and Seal) Anything other suggestions for keeping them fresh and yummy? And how long can I keep them? What about keeping them in the fridge (covered) for a few days???
Lisa
Cover them, place them in a plastic container, cover that and then put it in the freezer. If they were well sealed/covered I'm sure you do the 1-2 weeks in advance.
Keeping them in the fridge for a few days I'm sure would work too. Just make sure they are well covered so that they don't pick up any smells from the fridge.

oooo! i didnt know you can freeze BC roses!! cool! that is good to know!!
Yup, some people do that because the rose will melt on them (because of hot hands) when they go to place it on the cake.
I freeze my BC roses first too but not for long...10 min maybe. Just until they're nice and firm so I can get them on the cake where I want and still have them looking like roses.
I like your idea of doing a half/half themed cake. I've never seen anything quite like that. Maybe on the grad side you could put tassles on the corners...school colors.
