I really need help. I have to put a burgundy monogram on a cake for saturday. I bought some monogram candy trays but did not realize I had to use special dye for candy. I can't find burgundy candy dye, but I do have burgundy wilton icing dye. Is there a way I can use the icing dye in the candy? I don't have any flo coat so is there a substitute or an alternative I couild add to the icing dye to make it work?
I really appreciate all repsonses!!
Rhonda
do not use a water based dye. You have to use an oil based dye or you will ruin your chocolate. Wilton colours in the little tubs are water based. So are the liquid ones you buy at the local grocery store.
if you are able to get some, Wilton makes a very small qty of colours that Michael's sells closer to their chocolate section.
Hobby Lobby carries (candy maker I think it is called) more of a line for chocolate colouring and they are sold in 4 packs that are primary and pastel in colour.
Water ruins any chocolate good or bad so you must use an oil based colour. Other than that you will have to mix a red with some blue to achieve the burgundy colour you are looking for.
I am not sure which store or chain you might have, I am sure AC Moore of Ben Franklins would carry these as well.
Good luck Claire
If you start with red or light cocoa candy melts you'll be better off...you would have to add SO much burgundy that the melts would definitely sieze up. If you start with the darker color melts and add a tiny bit of Crisco with your color, you should be fine. Otherwise, yes, you need the oil based colors and you will STILL need a TON if you start with white melts!

Ok, do you have a ratio in mind as to how much crisco I should add to the regular wilton color?
Thanks!

I don't have a hobby lobby in my area, just michael's and ac moore. I already checked Michael's; they have candy colors, just not burgandy. I wonder if I should try to mix the red and blue until I get a color.
By the way, if I wind up having to use blue and red to make burgandy, is it best to start w/ a light cocoa or dark cocoa colored candy melt?
