Hi all,
Let me first say that I am in love with this site, all I want to do is spend my Mothers Day browsing it, but alas, off to MIL (also her Birthday).

I am doing a Wedding and Grooms Cake for July. The brides fiance is a music minister and she would like a guitar cake for him. Lots of questions here.
1. Guitar pan or sculpt from a sheet? Pictures are helpful, directions are better!
2. The groom like the whipped cream icing (is that right?) the stuff that the stores put on their cakes that isnt buttercream. Will this work up OK for this cake and give the detail I want?. Here is a picture of it..
3. I have to travel 2 hours to deliver this and the wedding cake middle of July (family friend) Is this wise with this icing?

Any insights appreciated. Thanx a bunch Heather

You could do either...here is a topic of someone who made a guitar pan out of a sheet cake...it's in the cake disaster area.. http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-ftopict-1377.html the person did a very good save into turning it into a guitar.

It would probably work for the main icing part of it...but some details would want to be done in buttercream or fondant

Most whipped cream icings need to be refrigerated soooo, you might want to be careful...
Hope this helps!

PS- Glad to have you aboard!

Welcome to CC....I made a guitar cake for a groom last summer, I will pm you pic if you want. I used buttercream due to the couple requesting it. It is a somewhat stiffer icing also, and upholds in summer humidity very well. Something the whip cream icing would have problems with. Good Luck!

I agree with the other girls. July is a hot weather month, I would not risk having a hard work cake decoration job because of the weather. I also made a guitar (see it posted with my pictures here) and I used simple BC which I added orange extract because the person likes that fruit. Good luck and keep us posted!!! icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif

Interesting topic because I have a printout of a similar guitar, only it has 12 strings instead of 6. Have a friend who is getting married this August and he is a musician...This is my pet project...he doesn't know about it and I"m not sure if I'll be able to make it...
I was planning on:

1 - Sculpting it out of a sheet cake
2 - Cover it w/fondant (inside will be torted with my btcm filling that holds well)
3 - Will blast my air conditioner icon_wink.gif

The plan is to sculpt each part individually...and make a caramel/amber piece for the top right of the guitar (melted sugar cut out to shape)...have no clue, never done it, but I'll try it icon_wink.gif It's got to look real!

But thinking about your whipped icing from the bakery, that stuff has a lot of shortening in it does it not?? That wont' be a problem at all if it's the case...It doesnt' have any fat in it so it can't melt...Make sure you put a cover or shade over it to prevent it from getting exposed to the sun...

Godiva, Your idea is excellent!! I'm sure you'll create another master piece.
Regarding the bakeries "whipped cream", I personally had a bad experience during the month of August. Cake was being transported from NJ to PA , it arrived not melted but very soft and trimmings did not hold well. Bottom line, cake was not what my cousing was expecting. It was delicious and pretty but not as beautiful as it should have looked. icon_redface.gificon_redface.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.giftapedshut.giftapedshut.gif

Ok.. this was one was one of my first cakes so I know it's not that great, but size wise it might be what you are looking for. It was a double layer 11x15 for the main part and a double layer 9x13 for the neck of the guitar. I drew a pattern on wax paper and then cut out the cake. They wanted it to be all pink. At the time I was so pround of myself... now looking back OMG it's a little embaracing.

Oh, I forgot.. I'd be leary of whipped frosing in the summer... at least here in the deep south! I used BC with fondant for the parts and BC for the strings.

Thanks for sharing peacock! That was really cute, so dont' be embarrased, especially if it was the first of a kind for you!
How many people did it feed?? I was almost clueless about the size but now I have direction... thanks.

Thanx for all the help guys,
I believe I will ditch the whipped frosting, I did one wedding cake in i t before, turned out beautiful but was a major pain to work with, kept wanting to melt in the bag in my hands.

I to want to make the one piece from amber sugar piece, I also have never done it.

Think I will stick to buttercream with fondant accents. May try MMF, Have never done it before and have only used fondant a little, will see if I get the time to practice.
Thanx all again. Heather
