Ok....another question....sorry.....do you stick the pick in the foam first and then push the cupcake onto it??????????
Ok....another question....sorry.....do you stick the pick in the foam first and then push the cupcake onto it??????????
Yes, it will look something like this before you stick the cupcakes on it.....be sure not to leave so much of the stick poking out that it comes through your icing though!
not sure why the picture appears blurry...sorry.
How do you get thr darn grass to STAY!!!!!! you can see my foan through it, and its falling all over the place!!!! ahhhhh!!!!
Thanks Cambo for all your help and suggestions...I, too, nominated you. You are priceless!
I hot glue my ball into the pot and hot glue the grass on top of the ball. it's worked fine and I dont have to worry about it falling out if I tilt it.
Question about mini-cupcakes. Are there liners for the mini-cupcakes? I haven't seen them before so am not sure if they need liners too. Mind you I'd have to find a mini-cupcake pan to bake them in too......
Thanks
They should sell mini cupcake liners where they sell the large ones. I think I got mine at Michaels. I do not have a pan either and they did fine just sitting on a cookie sheet with no cupcake pan, they didnt hardly spread open at all, you can see in my photos the small ones.
I've read this post and have tried it... Mine came out beautifully... Thanks Cambo for the idea and info... about the packaging... Why not take a cake board or a thick piece of cardboard, cover it with white or printed contact paper, then hot glue or tape a tall piece of acetate or mylar around it... it will look like the cylinder container that you posted, then either top it with another piece of acetate or wrap it in cello. ... Does that make sense...
I've done edible topiaries in the past. See my photos for a picture of strawberry topiary. I think a "CUPCAKE" Topiary will be gorgeous!!! I think I will try it out this weekend for mother's day. I can picture it now, white roses with subtle pink trim and greens from the bottom. TOOOOO excited. Thanks Cambo for getting the old idea engine churning again! Actually I think I was able to attach it, cool!
Some of the grass does trickle out....but once you get them cc's added, noone will pay attention to the foam....you could always use green foam instead!
I have done cupcake topiaries. We had a demo on it a couple years ago. I have a picture, but that was pre-digital camera and it looks pretty bad. I do remember I had to use a pretty thick dowel and it was 2 tier instead of just one. I could probably find the instructions it you're interested in some of the logistics.
I love the chocolate one a lot better!
Okay, so today I finished my very first cupcake bouquet order! (this is my first sale ever--woohoo!) I got two more orders today too, so I'm up to 13!
Here is more information:
1) In trying to lower my costs (since I can't charge more than $15 around here), I found a package of 3 rectangular foam bricks. Each of these bricks can be sliced into approx 1.5 inch thick sections. I'm using these instead of the 1/2 foam balls and they cost me .10 each instead of .87 each. They work just as well. I covered mine with a teeny bit of brown shred.
2) I found the 1M tips at Michael's and Hobby Lobby.
3) I found ivy sets for .50 on sale at Hobby Lobby (which lowered my cost of greens by 50%).
4) I won't be using paper liners with these anymore! After the bouquets sit for a few hours, a couple of the liners couldn't hold the weight of the cupcake and they kept breaking in half. Not good when you've got a customer coming to pick them up in 30 minutes and you're running out of frosting! I am officially switching to the nut and party cups for cc bouquets, I don't trust paper liners anymore.
With a few other minor adjustments (such as finding pots cheaper at Walmart), my costs are now down to $2.60 each from 4.06!
Here is my very first cc bouquet order. I am very pleased with these.
Very cute! By cutting your cost you are improving your profit margin, nothing wrong with that. We tried for the first time last night (it was a hit at Head Start this morning). Tonight we are making three more...this is so much fun! So many different container possibilities, so many colors!
Ooooh.. let me know how the plastic container pans out. Those look perfect.. even if it was square. A 9" square box would be great I think.. and a stryofoam piece to fit in the bottom to prevent shifting would be perfect..
I bought 2 pots today and have them all set to go for making my mom and my MIL one of these for mother's day. I can't wait to see how it turns out. I have to get a 1M tip.. oh darn.. an excuse to go to Michael's..
I had a brainstorm too for when you sell them. What if you were to include a small packet of seeds under the styrofoam ball so that they can use the pot afterwards. Just add some potting soil and you have 2 gifts in one. You could get a packet of seeds for under $2 and get some tiny zipper bags and put 3-5 seeds per bag and the cost would be minimal and it would add another facet to the gift. What do you think?
O.k. I found the 1M tip.
So now I am embarressed to say that I don't know how to make the flowers, can someone tell me how to do them ?
Also what recipe are you using for them ?
Sorry to be such a pain, but you guys are great at this, so who better to ask.
steph, great job at cutting those costs! I'm happy for you.
jkalman, I like your idea of inserting the packet of seeds. Makes the gift last much longer.
All the photos that are posted are beautiful. You CCers are doing a wonderful job with these. I can't wait to jump on the bandwagon. Hopefully I'll be able to make a Michael's run tomorrow.

I like your idea....but just don't want the xtra work and expense....UGH! I'm going to use the bags that I bought earlier and I'm adding a couple xtra foral picks here n' there to keep the bag from collapsing onto the cupcakes! I did it similar to Brooke208 before, but when you drive with them, the bag will collapse onto the cupcakes if there's nothing in there to keep it up!
I bought more pots today....I've sold out of my colored pails. I'm up to 36 bouquets sold! It was 22 this morning! I'm making 1 dz xtra for my hubbie to sell at work cuz never fails, people see them that didn't know about them and have to have them! Good for me....oh I'm being greedy!
Everyone's bouquets look so lovely!
O.k. I found the 1M tip.

Here's a TIP from the cupcake bouquet tutorial that's coming....
TIP FOR MAKING ROSETTES: Start your swirl in the center of the cupcake and move ONLY your hand in a clockwise direction, NOT your entire arm as we often do with other decorating techniques. This forces the icing to twist n turn on top of itself and results in the illusion of folds in the icing!

Just wondering if you're baking from scratch or from a box mix? I bake from an enhanced mix and haven't had one bit of trouble with cupcakes coming loose, ripping or falling off the picks! I've had some bouquet samples for days now and they haven't budged!
I was just wondering if they might be heavier cuz they're from scratch?
ooh ooh...I just thought of something else! You mentioned that you're going to start using flat bricks instead of balls and it works just as well (I understand the cost issue), BUT, if the cupcakes don't have a "surface" to rest on, and they wouldn't have as sturdy an area with a flat brick, that might be causing added stress and be cause them to rip? Just trying to think of what could be causing that for some people!
Awesome tutorial.
It makes it a little easier, now that you can see what to do.
Great job, and great idea.
Thanks for taking the time to help everyone out, you have been terrific.
There are going to be alot of happy mothers come sunday.
You should be proud.
Cambo-
Yes, mine are from scratch...that could easily be the problem. However, I've had so many people say that this is the best cake they've ever tasted, that I don't want to switch. Hence, the party & nut cups! Too bad they're more expensive though.
The first cc bouquet that I made (yesterday), I made with a foam ball and had the same problem, so it must be the mix vs. scratch thing. Good call!
36 orders, huh? That's terrific! My goal was 20, but maybe I should UP that a little!
Steph
Has anyone tried them with filled cupcakes yet? I hardly ever get any orders for plain (unfilled) cupcakes, so I need to be able to fill them in order to sell any. If not I guess I'll have to do a trial run on my own.
GREAT tutorial Cambo!!! I'm heading out tomorrow to by some 'supplies' to try my first ones for Teacher Appreciaton Day and Mother's Day!! Can't wait!!! Sure hope they turn out half as good as all the ones I've seen here!!!
Has anyone else tried doing them with the mini cupcakes yet??? Saw one (sorry..can't remember who's it was) --- it was really beautiful!!! Trying to decide which one to try first!!!
Thanks all for some great ideas!!!
fragglerock1 - what do you fill your cc's with? I've never filled a cc before.[/quote]
