I have found a couple of pics, but they are not the best for FBCT. I wanted to look in the gallery, but as you know it is having a few glitches right now!! icon_cry.gif I was hoping my wonderful CC friends could help!!

My mom's friend/co-worker is retiring and moving to Paris. I wanted to do a BC covered cake with the Eiffel tower on it (FBCT?) and then add fondant decos around the edges?! I like the idea of the red and white or blue and white awnings you see at shops that have that aged look - trying to figure out how to incorporate that.

ANYWAY - anybody got any Eiffel tower pics or brilliant ideas? I was thinking maybe the awning stripes around the sides of the cake, but I don't want it to look like a "circus" cake icon_lol.gif ! I want the cake to have that pretty old yellowish color with some black embellishments that just scream "Paris" to me! Thanks in advance for your help!

Sounds like a fun cake (and my dream to boot!) - I'd love to live in France!

Kate Sullivan (google her if you don't know her) has a gorgeous soft yellow/white cake that is very French in it's presentation. It's a wedding cake, but the scalloped edges on one tier might be perfect for the sides of the cake like you're thinking.

I'll keep thinking for you - I have great memories of France so it's no problem.

Thanks! I checked out her site and found what you were talking about. The scallops are cute! I wish I could to the Eiffel towers along the sides like her - but there's no way! It is very pretty, though! How do you think I could incorporate the "sidewalks of Paris" or shop canopies into this?

How big is your cake going to be? If you are doing a stacked cake you can incorpoate a sidwal winding up the cake to the eiffle tower? Just a thought! Didn't know how ambitious you were going to be!

Check out the pics on user Sophiebelle. That's my SIL and she has a beautiful Royal Icing Eiffel Tower in her Photo Album. If you PM her, I know she'll be happy to tell you how she did it, she a real sweet heart! Wish I could help more, but I'm just a newbie! Good Luck! thumbs_up.gif

Why couldn't you do those Eiffel Towers? Have you worked with gumpaste (I can't get your pics to open)? They seem to be fairly simple. You would need a clip art of the eiffel tower (the shape of it is not difficult, it's all the support work that is hard!), cut it out, lay it on gumpaste and cut with an exact-o knife. Let it dry, paint on any details you want and voila!

If you wanted to do a FBCT for the Eiffel Towel, here is a simple design.

http://thecoloringspot.com/images/wonders/eiffel-tower.jpg

If you wanted to give the awning this a try, you could look for inspiration on wall paper borders ... here is what I mean -
In the Search area, click on the border box, then Look for Bistro in the menu leave the color blank

http://www.decoratetoday.com/products/wallpaper/default.asp?zjxj=000S02881OT6&adc=XGWP&sdf=n&cm_mmc=Google*WALLPAPER*Null*wallpaper%20border&si=5&ref=1

This one is specific from that site:

http://www.decoratetoday.com/products/wallpaper/product_detail.asp?ptn=DZCA4E1&gensearchby=1&si=5

Hope that helps. There are all kinds of designs, you could reproduce a littel bit here and there on the cake, you could even make fondant or chocolate clay little props like a table and chairs a flower pot or whatever.

See even without being able to look at the pictures of our peers, we are able to get some ideas out there. Cant wait for the bugs to be out!

Good Luck.

I think if you take the drawing from my previous post you might be able to make a stand up tower.

Good Luck.

I would take the coloring book link that someone posted here
http://thecoloringspot.com/images/wonders/eiffel-tower.jpg
and print and enlarge 3 of them, then pipe and trace it in chocolate and let harden, scrape off the paper (wax paper?) you used to pipe the tracing on and them assemble the three chocolate tracings in a "triangle" fashion. I hope that makes sense!

Kate Sullivan has a book called Kate's Cake Decorating, with the Eiffel Tower cake instructions in it. I got it at my public library - it has the template for the eiffel towers. I love that cake!

Thank you so much for all the great links!! The pics are all so beautiful! I wish I was that talented - maybe someday! Sometimes I'm too ambitious for my own good. I had 2 cake disasters last week that brought me to tears and I don't think I could take another! (at least not so soon). icon_cry.gif

My mom asked me to just make a sheetcake (so boring!) and said I could decorate it any way I wanted, basically! If I didn't do the cake they'd just get a plain one from Sam's club with a few flowers on it and some writing - so whatever I do they'll be fine with.

I would love to think I am capable of doing a 3-d Eiffel tower in some medium, but I know I'm not quite ready for that, especially after last week! I stink at piping, so RI is out. I have not worked with gumpaste, only fondant, so I would hate to attempt something this ambitious in gumpaste without any practice. I wish I could do a 3-d, but I'm afraid I'll spend days and days on it just to have it fall apart and/or look horrible! I have never done FBCT, so I'm nervous about that, too, but I thought at least that doesn't have to stand up!!! icon_lol.gif

Not to trow another medium at you, but have you done chocolate?

You could take the tower coloring book thing I linked you to earlier, make it the size you want 3 inch high, and copie it 3 to 4 times, put it under a parchement or wax paper or even saranwrap. (use tape to hold everything in place.

The if you can find a Wilton's chocolate pouring bottle (basically an at home ketchup bottle) and fill it will melted chocolate wafers (so you dont need to deal with tempering and just draw the shapes, a thin layer, then stick it in the fridge or freezer and then 2 or 3 more layers. It does not have to be perfect.
I would just make sure to had little "pick" at the bottom of the feet, say 1 1/2 inch long by 1/4 inch wide and thick, these will work as stabilizers once you stick them in your cheesecake.

Once they are cooled, you can try and put them together. The worst thing that will happen is that you will have to eat a little chocolate, because you wont think it's presentable!!

I use a "bain-marie" or a crock pot with warm water not hotter than 120 then turn it off, it should keep your chocolate warm enough for you to do this for about 1 hour. It's really pretty easy and you can have some fun with it.

there are a couple of really good tutorials on this. If you are interested I can send you some links.

I just saw that you are making this for 100 and sinceit's cheesecake for, I am guessing there will several cakes, that way you could make little 2 or 3 inch towers, try to make 2 or 3 see how they are, you might like them. Very Simple Cream and Dark colors.

Sorry you had troubles last week-end. I know it will work out whatever you do.

Try something new, experiment it's all good!

Good Luck.

You are so sweet - I love CCers! The last time I worked with chocolate wafers I used coloring and it seized on me - but maybe wouldn't be so bad if I just use regular chocolate. I don't have time to get flo-coat (which I just discovered a few weeks ago on this site).

I would love any links to tutorials. I need to experiment with different things, I just hate doing it when I have a cake due! (although my family/friends are my guinea pigs considering they don't pay me anything - these cakes I do are all free except for them buying the food supplies - mixes, sugar, flour, etc!). It just makes me so upset to present a cake that looks crappy! Then the people who aren't close friends/family that see it think "does she really think she can decorate cakes?" - okay, so I'm reading their minds!! LOL

What do I do if the chocolate tower collapses? I wouldn't have time to make something else, would I? I have the hardest time figuring out when to do what so I'm not finishing up the last minute and going to bed at 5 in the morning, and getting up at 6:30!

I found another post about doing an eiffel tower cake, and there is a pic that I love, although I'd do it in sheetcake form and not stacked - IF I can manage to make a chocolate eiffel tower? I can use some of the design ideas, maybe a more muted red, though. I don't know.

It looks like some stencil work that was perhaps filled in with color and colored fondant. Can you email or call the website you got it from and tell them you're a new cake decorator and you love their cake - you're interested in how they achieved their techniques. The worst they can say is no!

Have you heard of American Cake Decorating magazine? In Vol. 12 issue 5 (Oct./Nov. 2006), there is a pattern for an eiffel tower made from royal icing. It includes complete patterns to trace in royal icing and instructions for putting them together, as well as decorating the rest of the cake. I went to their website and couldn't find a way to access the instructions, but you can buy the issue from them.

Here's my attempt at making an Eiffel Tower out of royal icing. It was very fragile after just 1 application of icing on the template I printed (I should have done 2 applications of icing to strengthen it, but I thought that would take away from the appearance - very delicate). I managed to get 3 of the sides attached together before I broke the whole thing. Got over-ambitious when I tried to attach the 4th side, which had broken in half... icon_redface.gif Anyway, it was a fun exercise & wasn't for a cake order, so it was fun practice with tips 2 and 3!

Found this one on eBay, but sure you could find them elsewhere, too. The item is a chocolate lollipop mold. Put one onto the cake, make a few extra for a lollipop bouquet, as a gift? Add some edible photos of paris, champs d'elysees (sp?) a old poster...
If you could mold a bottle of wine and a baguette and maybe some cheese, I think that would be a great addition to the sheet cake...
a beret?...
Just tossin' out ideas...
