I made this cake for an order but I'm not 100% satisfied with it. My husband always says that I'm so critical of my work so I thought I'd turn to you guys for your opinions. I told her that the cake would be $35 (cnd $) but I'm thinking of charging her $30 because I'm not that satisfied as to how it turned out. What do you guys think of it? I need some honest opinions...

Oh my gosh! That cake is adorable, you did a great job!! Personally, I think the price in US dollars would be a bit higher then $35!

.....and join the club, we are all so critical of our own work! I am never completely satisfied with my cakes, there is always one thing or another that I don't like!

What are you talking about?! It looks great! icon_lol.gif

Stick with the $35 (maybe even $40?)

You did a fantastic job! thumbs_up.gif

I just looked at your cake again and I'm not sure if it's a shadow or not around the cake, but you might consider using grease proof cake boards or covering the cake board so that the grease from icing doesn't soak into the board. Just a helpul tid-bit of info!! icon_biggrin.gif

Ya, they were new boards i was trying out and it did say that it wouldn't do that on the wrapper. That's another reason why I was going to charge her $30. I won't be using those boards again unless I cover it with foil first. I'm pretty disappointed with them.

She is paying you for your talent.... If someone else ends up ordering a cake after seeing how good this one is, you will be stuck with the lower price. Pat yourself on the back for a job well done icon_smile.gif and charge what you agreed upon. If you have trouble with the pat lrt me do it for you! thumbs_up.gif "Great JOB"

Well, thank you for your vote of confidence on my cake. She just came to pick it up and I told her I would charge her $30 because of the board being stained with grease. She loved the cake so much, she didn't care about the board being stained and she gave me $40 instead of the original $35. She said she'd definately will be ordering more cakes from me and plans to tell all her friends about them and give them my number thumbs_up.gif I guess I'm just way to critical of my work and need to lighten up on myself...lol.

The cake looks really great, definitely worth your price!

The paper boards do detract from it, I would probably be figuring out a way to get some foil on there! Do you have anything large enough to get under the cake so you could slide it onto another covered board or to slip some foil under the cake?

Anyway, your cake is beautiful and your price is reasonable! Janice

Fruitloop your cake was really nice. Advice my instructor gave the class a LONG TIME AGO, never explain your mistakes. The customer is not going to see what you see, and just as your customer did will give you more money for your talents. Its hard being critical of yourself but like my grandson tells me: STOP IT!! LOL.

I've gotten the grease ring before too. A simple border or fondant rope can fix it right up! Congrats on the cake it is so cute!

Fruitloop.

Don't you dare lower your price!!! That cake is well worth $35.00 here even if you don't think so.My characters are $35.00 to start...Did you ever find a supplier for boards??I just bought two sets of Americolor gels on Ebay the other day.PM me if you want the auction numbers. She had 10 sets to sell!! icon_smile.gif

I think your cake it truly gorgeous. I have the same trouble with seeing my mistakes. My husband is my best critic. If he says it is fine, then it usually is. I still find it difficult to hand over the cake. I am getting better especially when I think about how much I was paid by the hour for the cake!!! (if we charged the hours we worked, we wouldn't sell any cakes!)Please avoid foil if you can. I think it detracts from your cake and makes it look less professional. Maybe you could cover the current boards with a clear contact (adhesive plastic) to stop the grease ring.

No, I haven't found a supplier for boards yet. I need to find some that are like the ones at the bakery I use to work at. They were awesome, nice and thick and didn't stain. I don't want to go to them and ask if i can buy some boards because I'd feel weird about it...like I was taking bussiness away from then, kwim?

I don't really want to use a foil unless I can find a white foil or something. I agree with you Funky_Cakes, it takes away from the cake.

Thanks for all the replies icon_biggrin.gif

You did great work on this cake. Just remember, the people asking you to make cakes can't decorate like you can, or they wouldn't be giving you orders. Keep up the good work!

The cake was adorable and see how she appreciated it? Alright! I do agree whit the suggestion of a rope or border around the bottom edge. I find it usually finishes off my project nicely and camoflages the unevenness where the cake meets the board. I have a thing about that edge.

When I decorate my cakes I always slide strips of waxed paper under the edge all the way around. Then after I get it iced and ready to apply the border I slide it out (pulling sideways not straight towards me) and then always have a clean surface. Any icing that gets on the board is on the waxed paper. A lot of the time I use freezer paper to cover my boards, because it's heavy, white and wide, oh and cheap. The only grease is only visible as the cake is cut, if even then. The one I did for an open house at work barely showed any grease mark at all, and I decorated it last night and it was cut this morning at about 11:00 am. It had sat all that time on my counter in the box. Just another handy tip.
