I know there's many more...I'm sure someone else will add some more.

It's better to put together a system yourself. You can buy a printer for $50 to $100 (Canon ip1500 or ip3000) and the supplies at www.kopykake.com Ink runs about $30 and 24 frosting sheets runs about $30. So the total cost will be between $110 and $160.

I bought my edible ink package from ebay. My total package was less than $195 including shipping costs. My package came with the printer, a disk of over 70,000 images, edible ink cartridge, frosting sheets, and other items I have not opened yet.

I'm not sure what sugarcraft offers in their package but if you are just starting to use an edible image printer then you probably wouldn't need that much to start off with. You could buy as you go depending on what you need.

See the link below from ebay. There are about 3 or 4 packages available. One is up for bid at $41 right now.

This package is a $49 printer with only 12 frosting sheets and cartridges. If you wanted to bid on it, I wouldn't bid over $70-80 (shipping is $25). I've seen these auctions before though and the reserve is usually at least $100.

Lisa
There were more packages at the end of the page. They were in the buy it now section. Those packages came with more than just the frosting sheets.

I haven't found any deals yet (eBay included) that were a better deal than buying the printer from Amazon or some place similar and the supplies from Kopykake. I'd hate to see anyone pay more than they had to. These package deals aren't usually a good deal.

I got my IP3000 brand new from ebay it was around $60 delivered. Cheapest price I've seen yet. I'm gonna be selling the cartridges to lower that cost even further. It's gonna be dedicated for edible images.

You got such a good deal Joe...that's a nice printer. Sometimes I wish I'd gotten a 4 cartridge. The ink lasts longer and they're easier to refill. Selling the ink that came with is a great idea too! Some of the sellers on eBay who sell the edible printer packages do that!

does anyone own the home/hobby kit from icing images? I am considering that one..or the next step up (with the four printer cartridges). I dont want to waste money, but I have four children and it would definitely get use! Is the system with the four cartridges a better idea?
thanks

Here's a stupid question for you....do you have to have a dedicated printer to do edible images or can you jsut use your regular printer and switch out the ink cartridges??

Not a stupid question, very important question.
You MUST have a dedicated printer. Otherwise you could contaminate your edible images with toxic ink.

Yes...the four cartridge system is better but don't buy it from Icing Images. You'll pay too much. Buy the Canon iP3000 printer somewhere like amazon.com and then buy the cartridges and frosting sheets from kopykake.com. You'll save quite a bit of money doing it this way.

how does that work? Is that amazon.com like ebay? Are they auctions? It says to "buy" for 39.99? But it shows seller's name, like an ebay auction? can you return them if there is a problem? This is interesting.
Thanks for the info.

amazon.com works in a couple different ways. You can buy from amazon or you can buy from a seller/store that works with amazon (uses amazon as a platform to sell goods). I've never bought from any of the individual sellers. If I want to do that...I just go to eBay where I know my way around. You could do what Joe did and buy your printer off eBay. Just search for a new Canon iP3000 printer...it must be new and not refurbished. Be sure the seller has really good FB because a return or refund may not be offered. Walmart may also carry this printer...also Circuit City and I know Best Buy does.

When you get your new printer...don't install the factory ink cardtridges. You'll only be using the edible ink cartridges which are exactly the same only they are filled with edible ink. www.kopykake.com sells these and they supply almost all of the other places. That's where I buy my inks and frosting sheets.

If you don't think you'll print but a few images a month. You could go with the iP1500 which is a 2 cartridge system. That one runs about $50 new.

Yes...that's it.

When I bought my system, there wasn't a Cake Central, so I really appreciated knowing that I had someone I could reach with any questions or problems.

I can understand that. I got clued in at Sugarcraft and then learned a little more at Kopykake. When I first started out, I had no idea all it took was a Canon printer...I thought it had to be some special printer that would cost $100s and some do! It's safe to say that if you don't want to DIY, places like Icing Images are a better deal the the ones I've seen on other sites which can run well over $500.

Hi Lisa, I just ordered the 3000 for $39.99 on Amazon.com (I got a gift cert. for Mother's Day), shipping was only about $13.50, a lot cheaper than those folks on eBay are charging! I'll be shopping at KopyKakes for ink and wafer paper. The cakes I make for Tic Toc will be about 100% easier using this system.

Thanks for all your advice and help! Janice

WooHoo Janice! You're going to love it! You'll want to buy frosting sheets rather than wafer paper though. If you need any help picking out the right cartridges just let us know.

It's a fixed price. Just make sure the seller has a great rating. If I remember...the one selling the printer for $39.99 does.

I can't wait, I get my new computer in a few weeks and I'm going to get one of these printers for it. I think that it will be great to finally be able to do these.

Question- Lisa you mentioned not to do the wafer paper. What is the difference between the two?

If you can picture thick, stiff edible tissue paper...that's what wafer paper is like. The paper is somewhat transparent. When you print on it, it doesn't take the color well. It also doesn't melt into your cake. Frosting sheets are just like a thin layer of dried frosting. They taste sweet, print in vibrant color and melt into your cake. Frosting sheets taste better and look better. They also cost more but well worth it.

Hey Lisa, sure glad you cleared up the difference in wafer paper and frosting sheets (I think the key word here is paper), I know I'd read it before but had forgotten. Do the frosting sheets store and keep well? I won't be using a lot of them and don't want to order too many if they will not keep.

About the inks, what are the choices and what do you recommend? I have looked at them before, but it was some time ago, I guess the same question applies to them as the frosting sheets. I know you recommend the head cleaner too.

I appreciate your help very much. Janice

Oh, yes, the seller I bought from has a 5 star rating. Not sure how he can sell and ship for so much less than the others.

The frosting sheets keep for quite a while as long as they stay sealed in the ziploc bag they came in. I've had some going on 3 months now and they're still good. You just have to keep them from drying out.

http://store.kopykake.com/cgi-bin/store/KJFS0811.html

These are the cartridges you'll need...
http://store.kopykake.com/cgi-bin/store/6000-SET.html?id=UseacILI

They cost almost twice as much as the 2 cartridge system but they last a lot longer too.
