Well... As some of you remember, my first grooms cake was due on Saturday... It was for a friend-he played baseball with my DH on a Navy Division League- I asked his fiance if she had ordered one and she said no and that she had forgotten about it and asked if I would do one that would feed around 30-35 people and I agreed...
She said that he loved USC and chocolate covered strawberries--and obviously baseball... so...
I had made this glove out of rice crispies and fondant... SOOOO COOL... to put on top of the cake with tuxedo strawberries flowing out of it onto the cake....Even DH was super excited about it...
Well...that was the plan anyway...
I got the cake made, cooled, filled, stacked, iced and doweled and had begun to assemble and then disaster struck--the glove began to split the cake in two!! AAAAHHHH!! So I snatched it up and checked the support system and came to the conclusion that the cake was too soft/moist and therefor was not dense enough to keep the dowel system upright and it was essentially tearing the cake into... well... this was at about 6:00am the morning the cake was due and I made an executive decision to forgo the glove completely (so sad-between exhaustion and disappointment I nearly had a melt down) and went to plan B... Which was this...

USC Pennets (sp) and monogram in team colors... baseball diamond and tuxedo strawberries...

Not exactly what we had planned but turned out OK I guess... Never did sleep that night but they loved it-- he just went on and on... that makes it all worth it...
Oh and I thought I would get the icing from a certain bakery that makes awesome chocolate buttercream and let me just say--I HATE non-crusting icing! Just can't ever get it smoothed out!! Oh well--lesson learned!

Thanks for reading my novel!! icon_smile.gif

PS. Any advise would be Greatly Appreciated!!

It looks great to me! The strawberries are PERFECT!All that matters is that they loved it.

I can relate with the non crusting frosting, I had that same disaster one time, it's so frustrating. At least on a grooms cake, smooth deosn't matter as much, especially with a sports themed cake.

You really did an awesome job!

I'm so sorry you had such a frustrating experience. I can relate, as I still consider myself very new to all this stuff and I run into unexpected problems.
BUT.....those strawberries are awesome! AND they loved it!
So rest easy!

I think, despite your plan A, your cake came out AMAZING! What a way to recover even after all that hard work! thumbs_up.gif

I think the baseball diamond on top looks great. and the tuxedo strawberries look like they are getting ready to play baseball! I don't know what plan A would've looked like but, who cares! Awesome work!

Wow that came out looking amazing! Sorry to hear you had frustrations along the way. It's funny, well not haha funny, but it's funny how there sometimes ends up being a plan B. I cant remotely compare my stuff to yours or any of the cakes here in caliber, but I do know that long the way, things have happened, despite lengthy planning, and there has to be a plan B -and ability to land back on the feet when disaster strikes, and you definitely have done that! Congratulations, you should be really proud icon_smile.gif

I am sure that you were the only one disappointed by this cake because it didn't meet your vision. The great thing about that is they didn't know your vision and it turned out wonderful!!! The strawberries are perfect and it looks great!! I can see why he loved it!! Great job and I would love to have a strawberry, lol!
