Can luster dust only be used with fondant or can it be used with buttercream icing? If I understand correctly, it needs to be brushed on...but can it be combined in the buttercream icing to give it shine?

I have not mixed with bc, but have dusted it onto bc after it crusted, and it gives it the luster- I think if you mixed it in, it may not, but it might be worth experimenting!

It doesnt give the same metallic sparkle when you mix it in.....and in order to achieve the color of the luster dust in the bc.......you'd have to use a ton of it......it just wouldn't be practical.........if you want to brush it on to bc you can do that......use a crusting bc and let it crust over a bit and then brush on the dry dust using a blush brush or some other really soft brush and dust lightly so you don't smudge your icing.

You can mix it into bc, but it takes A LOT of dust. A LOT.

Thank you KHalstead for the tip about using a super soft brush to apply luster dust! I only wish I had known this on Friday. I used a regular paint decorating brush and it left little grooves in my BC.

Has anyone else had a problem with extra dust on their cake? How do you get it off?

I use new makeup soft eyeshadow brushes to apply luster dust and that works well for me. I have applied it to crusting buttercream with great results.
