Ok, posted earlier about frosting ideas. Decided to go with Alice's frosting. Mixed all of my ingredients and frosted the cookies. The frosting tastes fine and frosted fine, but it looks kind of "spotty" to me. It doesn't look bad, looks interesting actually, but not sure why it does look this way. Not a solid, consistent color.

Any ideas ??

Thanks !!

Do you have some photos you can show us? Possibly the icing was not mixed long enough? Color not mixed enough? Air bubbles?

Well, no pictures YET, but I will post some. How long do you mix the frosting ?? There was no time listed, so I just mixed until it uhm.... looked mixed.

Just enough until it is blended well and depending on where you live, the humidity can make a difference with the sugar. Maybe try sifting the sugar to smooth it out a bit more next time? Maybe it was just the color mixing and not the actual icing.

You know, I had the same problem when I made this icing. I just think that maybe we had to add so much water to get it the right consistency that it started to break down the sugar or something. Atleast, that is what I had to do. I could never get it the consistency I wanted, I prefer royal icing much more.

I'm not familiar with Alices frosting, missed the earlier post. Is it a recipe here on the site? Anyway, I was just wondering if it needs to be mixed the same as the royal icing does? The royal icing calls for 7-10 min. or until it loses it's shine. I don't know how long you mixed this other, but if it wasn't that long maybe you could try the 7-10 min and see if it helps icon_smile.gif

Actually Patton78, that's what I think. Added too much water to thin it down and it did not do well with the butter. Tastes really good though and now that it is semi dry, it does not look that bad. I think I prefer the royal icing too--just a little too crunchy for my likes though icon_sad.gif

Alice's isn't royal though and technically doesn't need to be thinned (prior discussion on this....I had thinned it myself). I hadn't had any problems with it but it did take much longer to dry. I didn't mix mine 7-10 minutes, I don't have that kinda time with a hand-held mixer! icon_confused.gif

Here is the recipe, cakesbgood:

Alice's Cookie Icing

Serves/Yields:
Prep. Time:
Cook Time:
Category: Frostings
Difficulty: Easy

This tastes wonderful. Hardens so you can stack or bag the cookies, but is still soft to bite into.

1# sifted powdered sugar (1 pound equals 4 cups)
3 TBSP. meringue powder
5-6 TBSP water for a thin consistency
1/2 cup butter

Cream butter, add sugar & meringue powder, then add water. For a stiff consistency to make a dam on the cookies, I beat in 2-3T of water first, remove some icing for stiff consistency, then add more water until it is very thin & flows like color flow.

I agree that Alices does taste good but if you want a really dry cookies, you must use royal icing. If you want Alices to flow nicely onto your cookie, you have to thin it down, how else are you gonna get that great look?

Ok, I see. Thanks Zamode, maybe I'll try this sometime for something different! So it really is the exact same as the royal icing except for the butter it looks like. I think I will try it!! Thanks again thumbs_up.gif

I found Alice's to be good but it's still sweet, don't let the butter fool you but that's just my opinion. If you want cookies that will dry fast, use Antonia's. That usually dries within hours for me, stackable dry (although I usually wait overnight to stack).

Good luck ladies, let's see the pics when you're done testing! thumbs_up.gif
