Black And White Cookies...anyone From Ny?

Has anyone ever heard of these? They are the big cookies frosted w/ half chocolate and half vanilla frosting. They look sooooo yummy. I saw on Food Network the other day, a bakery that made them in NY. Does anyone know how to make the frosting for these? The lady said the chocolate part was made w/ unsweetened chocolate (I believe), cream and butter. Seems kind of like a ganache. Then the vanilla frosting had meringue in it. When she spread it on, it looked SO smooth! I have watched it about 10 times now I was thinking this might have been an IMBC or SMBC, but have never made those, do they have actual meringue in them? Anyway, if anyone knows a good recipe for these, or can tell what the frostings were, please let me know! Thank you!

I'm from NY, but I'm not much help on this. I used to get them from the local bakery once in a while. The kind I got were a little different than your description. The chocolate side seemed to be a cross between a ganache and a BC frosting. The white was a BC. It's been a long time since I've had one, so I can't guarantee my memory being too accurate.

This seems like what I was thinking, maybe I wasn't clear enough. The chocolate just seemed kind of like a ganache because it seemed so rich, but it spread like BC, it kind of looked like the consistency of the store-bought frosing in a tub. Now the vanilla was definately thick like BC, but just was so smooth and yummy looking. I know it had a lot of butter in it, though. Because she said to make sure the cookies were cool before you iced them so that the frosting wouldn't melt, because the frosting was mainly butter. Thanks for your input, hopefully we get more info from others!

I've made them. (Forgive me, I'm Italian and we don't measure anything. All amounts are done by eyeballing it.)
I take about 2 cups of powdered sugar, mix in about 1 T of very hot water and 1 T of corn syrup. Divide the mixture in half, take one half and put it over a double boiler and melt in 1 ounce of unsweetened baking chocolate.
I don't care for the eggy cookie they typically use, so I have my own version with ricotta cheese.

You know who has a really good one? Maria Sanchez, the author of Marias Italian Cookie Tray... She's got one in one of her books and she said she worked at a bakery that made them, and all it was was a sugar cookie, ganache for the black, and glaze icing for the top.
Seems pretty simple, no? If you want the recipe let me know.

I'm also in NY and never really cared for the black and white cookies. Too bakery-ish tasting. I remember, as a kid, my parents moved us to Florida to open up a Jewish deli/bakery/restaurant (we're Irish and Norwegian!)....and we sold those cookies there. Didn't really like them then either.
In upstate NY we called them Half Moons. My whole family loved them. They were usually iced with white BC and chocolate BC from the bakeries we got them from. I've always wanted to have a recipe for the cookie and the icing. I can't wait to try them!
Hi, I make a traditional New York Black and White cookie.
Here is a good recipe for the icing (which is very similar to a poured fondant).
2 3/4 cups confectioners sugar
2 tablespoons light corn syrup
2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
4 to 6 tablespoons water
1/4 cup unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder
Stir together confectioners sugar, corn syrup, lemon juice, vanilla, and 2 tablespoons water in a small bowl until smooth. If icing is not easily spreadable, add more water, 1/2 teaspoon at a time. Transfer half of icing to another bowl and stir in cocoa, adding more water, 1/2 teaspoon at a time, to thin to same consistency as vanilla icing. Cover with damp towel to keep from drying out.
With offset spatula, spread white icing over half of flat side of each cookie. Starting with cookies you iced first, spread chocolate icing over other half.

So glad someone has started this thread.. Went on a cross country trip through your great nation for 3 months (Oct. till this Dec) had those black and whites at Roxy's in Time Squares.. Yummy!
Though just about fell on the floor when they told me it was $36.00 for 2 cookies and 2 corned beef sandwiches..
(mind you when we got back to the hotel and opened the sandwich, found out why they charged so much..1lb of corned beef in each sandwich.
Anyway, will have to try one of these receipes.. loved the cookies

Hey! Is this the big cookie Jerry Seinfeld was eating in the bakery with Elaine? Did you notice in that episode how the choc side and the white side kept changing sides? First the choc was on his left, then his right, then back on the left again. My daughter and I luv this episode just so we can watch the cookie change back and forth!

Thank you so much everyone for your replies! I can't wait to try some of these recipes for the cookies. Still searching for the icing, though. Most of these seemed like they had more of the glaze/poured fondant icing, not really what I saw that looked so good! Maybe I'll just try and wing it...probably not! Thank you, again!
Black and white cookies have a poured fondant glaze. Not buttercream.
Don't know what you saw, but that's what's traditional and what's expected.

Black and White Cookies
Vanilla Sugar Cookie:
1/2 Cup Sugar
1 Vanilla Bean
1 1/4 sticks butter, softened
2 eggs
2 cups flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
-Place sugar in small mixing bowl. With a small paring knife, slice the vanilla bean lengthwise. using the tip of the knife, scrape the vanilla seeds into the sugar. Mix until sugar and vanilla are well blended. Set aside.
-In an electric mixer, cream the butter and vanilla sugar until light. Add eggs. Mix until well blended. On low speed, add flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix just until blended.
-Wrap dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate 2 to 3 hours, or overnight.
- Preheat oven to 350
-Roll dough out onto a lightly floured surface to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut into 2 1/2 inch rounds. Place on a parchment-lined cookie sheet, spacing each 2 inches apart.
-Bake 10 to 12 minutes or untiil edges are lightly browned.
-Remove cookies from oven. Using a metal spatula, remove cookies from the sheet and place on a wire cooling rack. Cool completely.
Chocolate Ganache
1 Cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup heavy cream
-In a food processor, pulse chips until finely ground. Place in a small mixing bowl.
-In a small saucepan, heat the cream over medium heat, stirring constantly. Bring the cream to a boil. Pour cream over chocolate and stir until chocolate is melted and color is uniform.
-Use a small spatula or butter knife to spread chocolate onto half of the cookie. Refrigerate until set.
White Icing:
Just powdered sugar and a couple tablespoons of water, mixed until a thicker glaze consistancy. Again, use a spatula or knife to spread onto cookie. Let set.
