What is your starting point? Have you purchased an edible image and just need to apply it? Or are you making one of your own?

I was wondering how to do this to. I have 3 graduation cake to do with edible images and have never done it before. I am afraid I will break the edible image while putting it on the cake.

If the edible images are printed on frosting sheets, you'll need to remove the plastic backing and then place it on your buttercream frosted cake before the BC has had time to crust or form a skin. You apply it from the middle outward like a large sticker smoothing gently as you go. As long as you handle the image with care and it isn't dried out (brittle), you shouldn't have any problems with breakage.

If your edible image is printed on wafer paper or if you're using a frosting other than BC, the directions will be different. In most cases, you'll also want to use white BC under your image since any color, even brown from chocolate BC will show through the image.

I find that they're pretty flexible. I haven't had any real problems with them at all. You just start at one end and lift up the image with a fingernail. If it's going to be difficult, you can usually tell right away. Anyway, you just peel it away from the backing and lay it down on the cake surface. You need to do this fairly quickly after you've iced it, if you're using a crusting icing. I kind of hold mine in a U-shape and let the bottom of the U touch the center of the cake first. Then carefully let it down, from the center outward, until all the entire image is touching the icing. Lately, I've taken to putting a Viva papertowel over the cake top and smoothing with a fondant smoother to ensure a good bond. If you try to smooth without the paper towel, it will make a mess!!! Don't try it! Voice of experience! Also...you can't move the image once it's on the cake. Make sure you've got it pretty well eyeballed before you start laying it down.

Now...if the image doesn't want to come off the backing....

You can lay it face-up on a counter, and pull the backing straight down. Sometimes the image will then peel right off.

Or...you can try drying it with a hair drier for a little bit.

Or...my favorite method...is to pop it in the freezer for about a minute - not long at all. The cold will stiffen the plastic, and the image will come right off! In another minute, the image will have come back to room temperature, and you can then proceed with the application described above.
