How do I lasso Elmo's head?

I'm making an Elmo cake for my baby girl's 1st BIRTHDAY PARTY on Saturday and I was just thinking about the bake even strips. I put it around the pan to see how it is gonna fit and it slips. When I link two together and it's not resting right up against the pan, isn't that defeating the purpose? Do you all leave the strips off the character pans when you make them - or is there a trick I don't know about?

Just use flower nails, trust me, way easier...I wish I had never bought those bake strips. Turn your flower nail upside down in the pan so the pointy end is sticking up, then pour your cake batter in (after greasing the pan and nail of course).

I have made that same cake. I had never used baking strips. I would just lower the temp and cook it longer if you are afraid of over-cooking it. I don't recall my edges getting hard or anything.

I did it once by making a wrap with wet paper towel and tin foil. I lay the towel inside the foil and fold it over and then wrapped it around the tin and secured it with a bull dog clip. Its a bit fiddly tho. ( I was using a mud cake recipee and it needed a long time in the oven.) Or the other easier options are to lower your temp or you could bake it inside a box like Fran and Nati do. this protects it from the heat a bit. Just dont do that if you have a gas oven and use a corrigated cardboard box.

Thanks everybody! I didn't get any replies by the time I had to make the cake so I just lowered the temp. The cake came out just fine. I usually use the flower nail thing but I wasn't even thinking about it for this cake for some reason.... icon_confused.gif
