What is everyone's opinion on the food markers? I've seen them available at many kitchen stores but I thought they looked kind of gimicky. Then I read that many of you use them for writing on cookies or making little designs and after seeing your work, I'm impressed! Are they easy to use? Isn't it easy to dent the icing while using them? Do they write smoothly? I've seen a small set for about $9.00 and then I saw an Ateco set for almost $20.00. Is that worth it? I might just have to purchase them if I hear plenty of raves.
I just bought a pack of Wilton food markers. They are easy to use on a hard surface, like royal icing or fondant, but its not quite as easy on buttercream. That's just my experience. if you look at my pics, my cookies are written w/them and my March of Dimes cake plaque is also written w/them. If you look closely at that cake, the body of a clothes pin is drawn...not very good.
I like them! I have used them several times on cookies. I use Antonia74's icing recipe, and let it dry overnight before using the markers.
I used them on the cat cookies in my photos, and have received many compliments on them. The ones I tried to do with icing were so bad I didn't even take pictures, LOL, but loved the way they turned out with the markers.

I've tried the Wilton markers & they kinda stink. Not really vivid color. I love the Americolor food markers. I got them from this site and they were only $14! I also use Antonia's icing recipe and wouldn't use anything else for cookies! I recently made 2 dozen different shaped cookies and iced them all in white. I took them & a pack of the Americolor food markers to a family outing and the kids had a blast coloring & eating their own little works of art.
Peachez, I agree with you totally! Wilton markers suck, big time! The colors are dull - I have to go over my writing a couple of times, and it ruins the sharp lines. Also, I hate the tips - I don't know, they're way too pointy or something - they give this pathetic, weak little line that has no pizzazz. I've heard about the Americolor markers - supposed to be more vibrant. I'm looking forward to getting some.
I have the Wilton ones too but......do you think the Americolor or Ateco brands would blend together like paint does? It would be great if they have a "brush tip" on them. It also looks like they come in many more colors than the Wilton one's too. Those are just basic primary colors or neon colors. Yuk. I don't think they blend together well either.
I love my gourmet food writers. I write on fondant and edible photo sheets with them all the time. They come in cool colors too!
I have the Americolor markers, bought them here at CC, and I really like them. The colors are great. I used them on some fondant covered cookies and was very pleased. I recommend them!
I bought the kopykakes ones on ebay for 10 bucks with shipping and they work great.....only problem is some of them must be dried out (I'm guessing) they don't seem like the colors are very dark and I have to trace over what I'm drawing a couple times....like these cookies I did....I had to trace over the letters twice...but I think they turned out ok so I guess it was worth the trouble......I haven't tried using any of the other coloros LOL to see if they work out, so I guess I paid ten bucks for a black marker...oh well hahahha..I'm sure I'll use the others soon...I bought the stupid ones from the grocery store and they're horrible the end bends on them like a wet noodle they're just awefull if you try to do any type of details!!!
