Ok cookie girls!! I've got a bit of a dilemma and could use your opinions. I'm making about 4 dozen cookies for a luau at my DS's school this Friday night, just as gifts for the kids and to drum up some business. Of course, I want to go with the luau theme....but which shapes to do??? There's so many options! I want two cookies per pkg, so this is what I'm thinking....for boys: Palm tree w/ hawaiian shirt...for girls: palm tree with either a flip flop or a flower. What do y'all think? I'm open to any suggestions, but have to get started soon...as I also have to do a cake for their dessert at the luau and a teacher appreciation cake for school the same day! Agghhhh!! Thanks for any ideas/help!!
I think you have enough on your plate Jenn and enough deco smarts to do the right thing and get to it! They are great ideas, I bet the little shirts will come out so cute. Go with what you have, I say!
how 'bout the tree and shirt for boys, and flip flop and flower for girls? What ever you end up doing will be plain adorable I'm sure!!!!!
Boys sound good and I'd go with the flip flops for the girls. Good luck with everything. Wow you are going to be busy!!
Michelle
I have made the flip flops to RAVE reviews from teen and tween girls. The shirts sound cute - you could also do fish.
Yep I would go for the flip flops and flowers for the girls and for the boys palm trees and shirts sound good...you could also do a surf board for the boys Good luck - I know they will be FANTASTIC!!!
Thanks for all the input!! I agree, flops 'n flowers for the girls...but what about surfboards and shirts for the boys?? LOL Switching gears, I know...but I just realized I loaned out my palm tree cutter the other day and since I want to get these cut & in the freezer by tonight (to bake off on Wed.) I thought a surfboard would be MUCH easier to cut freehand or with a template. Plus, it wouldn't need as much detail deco as the palm, I think.
BTW - anyone ever done brushed embroidery technique on cookies? Flowers or hibiscus cookies, to be exact? I was thinking if I went w/the hibiscus cutter that it might look pretty neat and use far less icing than flooding the whole thing. Just outline, then pull-out the icing w/ the brush, then yellow line & a few dots for the center thingy..stamen?? Am I crazy for thinking it would go quickly?? Another thing is they would dry really fast since they wouldn't be flooded...THAT would be cool! Speed up the whole thing then. So, what do y'all think??
well you could cover the background of the cookie w/fondant instead of royal...much quicker and easier. then do a few of the decos on top w/royal or even some small fondant flower cutouts...b/c that would work for all the cookies. you could use the same cookie cutter used for the cookie for the background.
I do alot of pineapples, palm trees and surfboards here in Hawaii!
Also, for something "simple" you could just write "MAHALO" - or "ALOHA".
great ideas! I love the idea of surf board and hawaiian shirt for the boys. I think the flip flops and flowers will be great for the girls, too!
Can't wait to see the pictures!
Well...nothing went as planned this week...the cookie order even got changed...LOL. I had some unexpected family 'stuff' that put me off my 'cookie-schedule' by 2 days!! But the cookies being gifts from me to the kids changed to one of the teacher's actually ordering it from the school to the kids!! YAAAYYYY!!! I hadn't told anyone I was going to do it but a few of the teachers know I do this stuff....so the one heading up the luau thing called me. She decided on one cookie per kid (to keep costs down) and wanted flip flops, surfboards and sunshine's....so that's what I did.
There were 60 cookies in all, but I did 10 extra for back-ups. I charged $125...so after my costs, that put me making $27.50/hr!!!!! It took me a little over 4 hrs to do it. ummmm....I'm pretty okay with that! My DH, of course, figured all that out and informed me of it...I freaked, at first...never had a cookie order that large - in # of cookies OR price! But it comes out to $2.083333333 per cookie.....which some would say is undercharging, as they were 3 inch cookies...but the surfboards weren't that wide, just long. I just wanted to do it for exposure to the parents of the kids my son hasn't been in class with....so I got a two-fer!
Anyway...they were a little rushed, and I got a little jittery/shaky at the end of it and I think it shows, but the customer was very happy. The parents were flipping out and giving me lots of nice complements. I was saying to myself...'It's just a cookie! I've done better! Glad you can't see the way I left my kitchen!!'
Thanks for looking!!
Wow!! How exciting for you!! I am doing my first bouquets this week, also Hawiaan theme. I sure hope they turn out 1/2 as good as yours!!!
Those are absolutely Great! You did an awesome Job, and I'm sure you will land tons of business from that! You are so creative! I too, love the sand in the bottom. I would have never thought of that!
Congrats on your new hourly wage! It's a lot more than I make at my full time job as a Laboratory Technologist!!! (and probably alot more fun too!)
Awww - thanks everyone! Kelly - the tags are super easy. I just find an image on my computer or online that goes along with the color scheme or theme of the cookies....I put 2 to a page. Then I have my biz info on it as well, but upside down, so that once the page is printed, I will fold it in half lengthwise, cut in half, and then my biz info is on the back right side up. I print them onto card stock. I have one left over that's unfolded and uncut...lemme see if I can get a pic of it for you so it's a little easier to understand.
It's a boning tool! We use it in scrapbooking/cardmaking too!
LOVE the cookies! so cute! I'm digging the stripes on the surfboards.

Alrighty...that's my 'DUH!!' moment for today!! I knew that...LOL Yeah, I bought it to use making cards, too. I usually do all my own Christmas cards, party invites, etc. TOo simple that a long thing made out of bone could be called a 'BONING TOOL' right!?
Those turned out soooo cute JennT!! And thanks for the tutorial
Do you use 12 x 12 cardstock or Letter size?
Wow, thanks Jenn. That was great visual. I have a couple of questions though, is that 8x10 paper? so the tags are 4x5 after you cut them? If so do you use the normal cookie bags? Also how do you flip your bussiness info to print it. I am not so computer savvy. lol.
Kelly
The card stock is just letter size...8 1/2 X 11. So, yeah, they're roughly 4x5 once cut. I just buy the 'treat' bags that are on the aisle with the Wilton stuff at Hobby Lobby or Michael's...the ones that have gusseted sides (pleated, sort of)...not Wilton's brand, as they're a little pricey, IMO, but I don't remember the brand on them...they're like $2 or $3 for 50 bags. I think I've used Wilton's cookie bags before, too. The tag ends up being just a little bit wider than the bag itself, but I kind of like the way it looks. You could cut them down, if you like, to the exact width of your bag...but in my mind, that would just take soooo much longer to do. And the difference in width, of the tag and the bag, is so little really.
As for flipping the business info upside down...well - I guess it depends on what kind of program you're using. I have Microsoft Picture It! that's pretty much just for making cards, photo projects, pretty simple stuff. My business logo/info is a separate project on it's own...so I cut and paste it into the 'cookie tag' project, when I'm making them. Then I can move it all around by itself, shrink or enlarge it (while keeping it in scale) depending on what I'm working on, without changing anything else in that project....it has a box around it and I just select it and then choose to rotate it until I have it upside down. Then I can 'grab' it and position it to where it's centered over the image/text that will be the 'front' of the tag. Gosh...I'm sure I'm just explaining this horribly and confusing you!
Lemme know if you have any more questions...maybe my brain will be working better later & I can make some sense!!
