I have heard you can replaced it with milk and a tablespoon or two of lemon juice or vinegar.

To make pretend buttermilk, add 1-3/4 tablespoons of cream of tartar to a cup of milk, or add a tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar to a cup of milk and let it stand for 5 to 10 minutes. In many baking recipes, you can also just use plain yogurt or sour cream instead of buttermilk.

I hope this is what you were looking for.

Milk and vinegar work great as a sub. I saw a recipe recently that subbed sour cream for buttermilk.

Several of my recipes call for buttermilk, so I buy the powdered buttermilk and I always have it on hand.
