How many people on these forums do cake decorating for a living? Just curious because my husband always says 'you can start your own business doing...' but personally I am not a start your own business kind of girl, I would rather work for somebody doing cakes...

If you just do it for fun...what is your occupation?

I personally do it just for fun for now. I would like to explore my options eventually working for someone else (provided this isn't just a phase I am going through...LOL) Currently I am an office girl.

I do it as a part time job. I currently hold a full time job as a financial analyst so I can only do this on a part time basis. I don't think I could make a living from cake decorating alone since my clientel isn't that large.

I work for a large wireless carrier as a Traffic Engineer.

I started doing cakes after my kids were born and my first birthday cake was 60+ dollars. I said, "shoot, I'm crafty, I could do this" and save money too.

Nothing special. I'm an assistant manager for a store called Torrid. It's all plus sizes. I just do cakes for fun for now. I've only been decorating for a few months, so I've still got LOTS to learn, but it is my goal to one day open my own bakery. Here's hoping! thumbs_up.gif

I am an artist. I own Sanctuary Arts. I have only been doing cakes for a few months and look forward to doing them as another venture. I have already copywritten the name: The Pink Box. I remember in movies or tv when someone bought something special from a bakery it was in a pink box. Kind of the idea of the mint green boxes from Tiffany's. Everyone knows where you have been and how special that something in that container must be!

I am a paramedic and do cakes and such on the side for now. It's a dream to hopefully one day to be able to do cake decorating all the time. It'd be a lot less stressful for me.

Why don't we all invest in one huge warehouse and decorate and sell our cakes. Since we all love to decorate cakes and want to make money I think this would be a great place to start. LOL!!! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

I love decorating. Out of all the other hobbies I have cake decorating is my favorite.

I train horses for a living. Cakes are a way to relax or give me something to do when the weather doesn't cooperate. I love the horses and some of them love my cake! I'm also a student going for a veterinary degree. It's neat to find out about people. Thanks for asking the question. cowboy.gif

I am a customer service repair technician for Lionel Trains. Basically, I repair and play with toy trains all day.

I got into cake decorating because 75% of a meal is presentation. Olus I LOVE to bake and I want them to look as good as they taste, plus make money doing it! thumbs_up.gif

Cool Joe, you and my FIL could probably talk for hours, he LOVES Lionel Trains and I think the one he set up for my son is Lionel. My 3 yr old son is very into trains and when he's at "Nana & Pa's" they go in the basement and each puts a conductor hat on, way too cute!!

I am currently a stay at home mom of a two year old boy and a nine month old girl. I am currently pursuing my bachelors degree in accounting and only decorate cakes for friends and family. My hubby teases that I should have changed my major to culinary arts since I love baking and decorating cakes so much.

I am self employed but my business is family childcare my goal is to get the cakes into a supporting business so I can someday close the childcare.

Years ago I took a 1 week vacation and filled in for an aunt of a childcare child and she took him. I learned then working in a bakery was NOT for me. Too many cakes in a day and no creativity there was no time.

I need to depend on my income so for now I will grow both businesses.

I have a degree in photography, computer graphics, and cosmetology.
Funny huh... how live is. I have no schooling whatsoever in cake baking and decorating and been doing it off and on since i was 15(still waiting for a new wilton teacher at michael's)
I am currently assisting a friend of mine on weekends who is a photographer .
Out of all of them I LOVE baking the most.

I love reading all these posts too!! It is fun to find out about your friends! I am a SAHM to two girls (2 1/2 and 19 months). I started decorating cakes to save money, and earn some. I have been decorating cakes since September 2004 and I love it. I have a degree in Speech Communication and have worked in accounts payable and as an administrative assistant....so far being a SAHM has been the most fun and rewarding, but I miss having co-workers to chat with and go to lunch with!!! icon_smile.gif Now, we are always pinching pennies!!!

Suzanna, I know what you mean about pinching pennies! I worked in a Lawn & Garden Store till last Aug. when I hurt my back. That's why I became a SAHM again. It has been hard on my family without the extra income coming in. God has always taken care of us!!

I took the Wilton courses because my sister begged me to & also so I could get out of the house. I had been on bedrest from Aug to Oct. I was very bored!! Cake decorating is my first hobby!!! Yep... I never had a hobby before this.. well cleaning if you can call that one, LOL!!! I have always lived through my kids & DH. Not anymore! I have spent some money getting started but it has all been worth it!! I'll be going back into the work force hopefully in July. Then I won't be able to do decorating as much. icon_sad.gif We need the extra income! I hate it but we need it with 2 half grown kids! TEENS!

I quit work 22 years ago to be home with our 3 sons, opened an in home daycare, and took a Wilton class to be able to save money by decorating my boys cakes for their birthdays. Today, our three sons are either going into or leaving college, I still have my daycare, and I am decorating lots of wedding cakes (which would have been hard to do when my boys were younger). Who else started out taking a class to save money by doing their own cakes?
