I am doing a birthday cake for a friend this weekend and I am so nervous! This will be my first really decorated cake (man she is brave....lol) and I need some suggestions! I will be doing a 10 inch cake with a 3-D Pooh on top. how do I assemble/decorate? For instance do I sit pooh on top of the 10 inch then decorate or decorate him on a cake board then place him on the 10 inch cake? My friend gave me some suggestions! dowel the 10 inch so pooh won't sink then place a dowel down the middle of him, but I am still nervous! Do the dowels go through the cake board easily? I am desperate anything will help!!!! I told my friend to place a cake order somewhere else just in case my fell through, but she did not listen! I feel very pressured. This is a little girls first birthday and it's all riding on me icon_cry.gif

are you making the pooh out of the 3d bear cake?
If so decorate him on a board and then put him on the 10" cake

Ok, first things first... Breathe in through the nose, out through the mouth. OK, got it? Ok. I would suggest decorating the bottom cake and the pooh cake separately, and putting pooh on a separate cake board. I did one similar, with my frog on the pond, but he was sitting on a lily pad, and the lily pad was the cake board. So, if you can't do something like that where you hide the board, then make it the same size as Pooh's bottom icon_biggrin.gif . I would dowel the bottom cake, but I don't know about the pooh; I would be afraid it would fall apart if you didn't, but I don't really know what would be best with that. Any takers??

I have the 3-D Pooh pan! How do I get him on there without messing him up if that is actually something that you can explain.

Thanks,
Kim

Decorate pooh and then put him on the 10" layer. When you put the dowels in the 10" layer measure them by inserting them and marking where they meet the top of the 10". Cut them and reinsert them in the cake. Make sure you dowel (about 4) where you want pooh to sit. To dowel Pooh and the 10" cake sharpen the dowel on one end, push him through Poohs' head until you meet the cake board he's on. Now the fun part, take a hammer and tap the dowel through the cake board Then push it through until you meet resistence from the bottom cake board. Measure the dowel, remove, cut and reinsert it. Then you can comoflage the hole in Poohs head. HTH. icon_razz.gif

How are you going to decorate the cake? You could put pooh on a cake board a bit bigger than him, cover it in fondant so it is decorated like a picnic basket!

Are you doing stars to decorate the pooh cake? If so, decorate sepratately on a board leaving his "bottom" naked, about 2-3 inches, when you get there, just sit him on top and pipe his "bottom" with stars. I hope this helps.

Jo_ann, when you measure the dowels in the 10 inch it's frosted, correct? I've got my first one this weekend also.

Yes, measure after you frost. You want them high enough to support the top layer without smushing the frosting on the lower layer. Also sprinkle some shaved white choc or powdered sugar on top of the bottom layer where your going to sit the top layer. That also helps keep the bottom layers icing from sticking to the top cake board.

I read where someone posted an easy way to stack your cakes without messing them up. After you cut your dowels for the bottom cake, reinsert them but don't push them all the way in yet. Leave them sticking up just enough so that when you place Pooh on the dowels, you have finger room. Then once you've got him centered on the dowels, let go of him and the weight will push the dowels on into the cake and you won't have to stick your fingers in his icing. Make sense?

Chefsaltyblue had a good suggestion as well about leaving the bottom part of him undecorated until you get him stacked.

Good luck!!!
